HPU’s Bucky Smith, Austin Geisler named Atlantic Sun Men’s Lacrosse Players of the Week

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Redshirt-senior Bucky Smith and redshirt-junior Austin Geisler swept the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week awards, the league announced Monday. Smith was named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week while Geisler took home his second Defensive Player of the Week honor this season.

Smith tallied four points in High Point’s 9-7 win over Saint Joseph’s on Sunday. The midfielder scored three goals with one assist, all coming in HPU’s six-goal second quarter. Smith took just three shots in the game, scoring on all three.

Smith scored HPU’s go-ahead goal with 10:26 on the clock in the second quarter, giving HPU a 2-1 lead they never relinquished. It was his first of two unassisted goals. He also assisted a goal by Dan Lomas and got an assist from Matt Thistle for his final goal of the day.

Geisler picked up his second ASun Defensive Player of the Week award this season. He played all 60 minutes in goal for High Point and made 12 saves in the win. He made four saves in the first half, allowing HPU to build a 6-3 lead at halftime. He improved as the game went along, making eight saves in the second half to hold of a late push by SJU. Geisler also picked up three ground balls in the win.

High Point will travel to Fairfield, Conn. this weekend to face Sacred Heart on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Pioneers opened the season with an 8-6 loss to Binghamton on Sunday.
