College Men’s Basketball Final – Emory & Henry 78, Guilford 74

EMORY, Va. – Emory & Henry College snapped a 19-game losing streak Monday with a 78-74 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball win over visiting Guilford College.

Ryan Gravely drained four-of-five three-pointers on the way to a team-high 21 points as the Wasps (3-19, 1-13 ODAC) ended a 20-game losing skid to Guilford that dated to 2004.

Behind 17 second-half points by rookie Trever Hyatt (Connelly Springs, N.C./East Burke), Guilford cut a 10-point second-half deficit to two with 3:21 left in regulation. Hyatt’s three-pointer trimmed the Wasps’ lead to 66-64, but Charles Smith and Brandon Self scored consecutive baskets to restore a 70-64 margin with 1:49 to play.

After Hyatt made one of two free throws at the 1:38 mark, Guilford started to foul. Emory & Henry answered with six straight free throws and made eight of 10 foul shots in the final 90 seconds. A Matt McCarthy three-pointer got Guilford to within 77-74 with 12 seconds left, but Green iced the win by making one of two free throws four seconds later.

Smith finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Self notched a double-double with 11 points and game-high 10 rebounds. The Wasps held a commanding 43-26 rebounding edge and held the Quakers to five offensive boards.

Hyatt’s career-high 25 points paced Guilford (16-7, 10-4 ODAC). McCarthy finished with 21 points and three steals. Jake Hopkins (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) and Alston Furr (King, N.C./West Stokes) both scored nine points. Hopkins and Zeb Richardson (West Jefferson, N.C./Ashe County) shared team-high rebounding honors with seven. The Quakers entered the game with the ODAC’s second-fewest personal fouls per game average (16.6), but committed 31 of the game’s 53 infractions, nearly doubling their season average.
