LYNCHBURG, Va. – Headlined by school and meet records by sophomores Sydney Griffin and Megan Kirschling, the Elon University women’s track and field team racked up four event wins at the Liberty Quad on Monday evening, Feb. 17, at the Tolsma Indoor Track complex.
“Today was a good day given the recent weather not allowing us to practice,” said Elon head track and field coach #Mark Elliston#. “I was concerned going in, but seeing Sydney set a school record and a few others achieve personal-bests in their events showed their determination while competing.”
Griffin broke her own school-record in the 60-meter hurdles, taking the event title with a time of 8.60. The sophomore broke her previous personal-best of 8.62 that she set last season at the Virginia Tech Challenge.
Griffin also turned in a solid performance in the 60-meter dash, clocking in at 7.95 and third overall. Bria Turner and Simone Jackson were fifth and sixth in the race, respectively, with times of 8.019 and 8.02.
Kirschling tied a meet record in the high jump after capturing the event title with a mark of 5’7” (1.70m). Carrie Abraham and Haley Laird both cleared heights of 5’3” (1.60m) in the event, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.
Jennifer Pash claimed the 200-meters title with a time of 25.75. Jennifer Esposito was fourth overall in with a time of 26.19 while Bria Bell was sixth with her mark of 26.27.
The Phoenix’s “A” team of Bell, Pash, Veronica Luedke and Esposito took the 4×400-meter relay crown with a time of 3:57.26.
Freshman Shelby Cuddeback was Elon’s top finisher in the 3,000-meters with a time of 10:40.32 and seventh overall. Sabina Bains was the next runner up for the Phoenix in the race with a time of 10:41.23 and eighth overall. Brennan McDavid turned in a personal indoor-best in the one-mile run with a time of 5:18.91, crossing the line third in the race.
Abraham and Marie Borowycz both had marks of 38’1.25” (11.61m) in the triple jump, both breaking into the top-five all-time in school history. Abraham was third overall in the event, reaching her mark in fewer jumps than Borowycz, who finished fourth.
Bell was the runner-up in the 400-meters with a time of 58.27 followed by teammate Pash with a mark of 58.41 in third. Jackie Madden set a new personal-best in the 800-meters with a time of 2:18.77, second overall in the race.
The Phoenix will next compete in its final indoor regular-season meet of the year at the Virginia Tech Challenge on Feb. 21-22.
