College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 20, Ferrum 8

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior E’leyna Garcia scored seven goals and an assist in Guilford College’s 20-8 lacrosse win over visiting Ferrum College Tuesday in both teams’ season opener. Classmate Lily Colley added three goals and four assists for the Quakers (1-0).

After Ferrum’s Shannon Brown opened the game’s scoring 27 seconds into the match, Garcia answered off the ensuing draw and tied the game 22 seconds later. Her tally started an 8-1 Guilford run that included goals by five different students. Garcia had five first-half goals and one assist, which helped the hosts to a 14-6 halftime lead.

Guilford finished with seven different goal scorers, including junior Eleanora Keene, who chipped in with three goals and an assist. She also led Guilford with five ground balls. The Quakers won 18 of the game’s 30 draws, five by Garcia and four by Colley. Rookie Sammi Milbourn made six saves in her college debut.

Ferrum’s Courtney Hamm collected five points on three goals and two assists. Brown also had three goals, plus one assist. Lauren Blankenship finished with two goals, one assists, a game-high six ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Guilford plays host to the University of Redlands March 3 at 7:00 p.m.
