College Women’s Basketball Final–Guilford 67, Roanoke 44

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Freshman Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) scored a career-high 20 points off the bench in Guilford College’s 67-44 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Roanoke College Wednesday Night.

The bulk of Weatherly’s production came in the second half, scoring 14 of her 20 points to close out the game. The only Quaker in double-figure scoring, Weatherly shot 9-of-14 from the field and added four steals. Weatherly’s production off the bench buoyed the Quakers’ bench scoring production as the Quaker reserves produced 33 points as a unit.

The Quakers and Maroons kept the margin tight for the most of the first half, deadlocked at 18-18 through the first 15:32. The final 4:28 of the half saw the lead change hands four times with the Quakers going into the locker room with a two-point lead, 29-27.

Guilford swung the momentum in their favor to start the second half, producing a 14-3 run and holding the Maroons to just one field goal in the first 9:07 of the second half. After four Roanoke field goals in a timespan of 2:28, the Quakers mounted a 9-0 run and never looked back. Guilford’s defense would hold the Maroons to 17 second half points.

The Quakers dominated on the glass, out-rebounding Roanoke by 19. The Quakers pulled down 20 offensive rebounds that produced 17 second-chance points. Gabby Oglesby (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) led the Quakers in rebounds with twelve and added eight points and four blocked shots. Sarah Burnick added eight rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end of the court.

Guilford turned 19 Roanoke turnovers into 23 points while Roanoke produced nine points off 13 Quaker turnovers. The Quakers shot 40.9% for the game, including 43.8% in the second half. Guilford’s defense held Roanoke to just 27.6% shooting and eight field goals in the second half.

The Quakers (18-6, 10-5 ODAC) finish out their 2013-2014 regular season Saturday at 2 p.m., hosting Washington and Lee University on Senior Day.
