Elon Women’s Tennis Phoenix Set to Host Radford Saturday

ELON, N.C. – Though having to change its weekend schedule earlier in the week, the Elon University women’s tennis team will welcome the Radford Highlanders to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center for a 2 p.m. match tomorrow, Feb. 22.

“We are really looking forward to our match against Radford tomorrow afternoon,” said Elon coach Elizabeth Anderson. “We are working hard at fine-tuning our singles and doubles and are looking forward to playing at home again this weekend. We hope to see a great crowd Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.”

The team was originally scheduled for a double header against North Carolina A&T and Radford Saturday, but the match against the Aggies was cancelled earlier this week.

ELON vs. RADFORD: Since joining the Division I ranks in 2000, the Highlanders have been a consistent opponent on Elon’s schedule. The Phoenix and Highlanders have matched up 11 times through the years, with Elon holding a 10-1 record. Elon’s only loss to Radford came in 2000 when the two were members of the Big South Conference.

ON A ROLL: After dropping its first four matches of the season, Elon has won two straight and is looking to continue it’s brief streak against Radford. Last season, the team had two double-digit winning streaks. The Phoenix won 11 in a row to start the season 11-1 after dropping its season opener at North Carolina. After dropping two consecutive matches in March, the Phoenix won 10 in a row before falling to College of Charleston in the Southern Conference tournament finals.

FRIENDLY CONFINES: Dating back to the start of the 2013 spring season, Elon has a 12-3 record at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Its last regular season loss at home came March 14, 2013, against UNC Greensboro.

LOOKING BACK: The Phoenix welcomed future Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponent UNC Wilmington to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center Monday, Feb. 17, after having to postpone the match the week before because of snow and ice in the region. The Phoenix fell in an early 2-0 hole in dropping the doubles point and the first singles match, but Elon battled back to take a 3-2 lead with two matches remaining, both in third sets. Bryn Khoury suffered a setback on court No. 4 to allow the Seahawks to tie the match, but Tolley Rice earned a victory on court No. 6 to clinch the match for the Phoenix.

LOOKING AHEAD: Following tomorrow’s match against Radford, Elon welcomes UNC Charlotte to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center Wednesday, Feb. 26, for a 2 p.m. match against the 49ers. Last season, Elon defeated UNC Charlotte 5-2 at home on Feb. 28.
