College Men’s Basketball Final – Va. Wesleyan 75, Guilford 57

GREENSBORO, N.C. – D.J. Woodmoore led five Marlins in double-figure scoring with 19 points in Virginia Wesleyan College’s 75-57 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball win at Guilford College Saturday.

The Marlins raced to a 17-4 lead six minutes into the game thanks to intense defensive pressure that kept the Quakers without a field goal for three minutes. The margin grew to as many as 25 before halftime, when Virginia Wesleyan led, 42-21. The Marlins scored 25 points off of Guilford’s 15 first-half turnovers, which exceeded its season per-game average. Khoury Moore scored all 12 of his points in the first half and Woodmore had 11 at the break.

Guilford made a little run at the start of the second half to draw within 47-33 with 14:29 left in regulation, but the Marlins recovered and upped their margin back to 24 with an 18-8 run midway through the half. Colby Heard, the ODAC leader in field-goal percentage, made seven-of-eight shots from the floor and scored all 14 of his points in the second half.

Woodmore connected on four-of-eight three-pointers, which helped Virginia Wesleyan to 10 treys in the game. Cameron Owens made two three-pointers and finished with 12 points. He also shared game-high honors with nine rebounds. Sedric Nagy added 10 points, three assists and three of the Marlins’ 11 steals. Moore led the way with four thefts. Virginia Wesleyan scored 30 points off of Guilford’s season-high 23 turnovers and outscored the Quakers in transition, 10-4.

Freshman Trever Hyatt (Connelly Springs, N.C./East Burke) led Guilford’s scorers for the third straight game, netting 14 of his team-high 18 points in the second half. Will Koppenhaver made the most of his second straight start with 12 points and nine rebounds, both career highs. Jake Hopkins (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth), who was honored before the game as the Quakers’ lone senior, finished with 10 points and four rebounds.

Guilford earned the number-three seed in next week’s ODAC Tournament. The Quakers play Friday (2/28) against the winner of Tuesday’s #6 Randolph College – #11 Washington and Lee University contest. The tournament quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be played at the Salem (Va.) Civic Center and viewable on line at odac.tv.
