Buccaneers Sweep Elon Men’s Tennis in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Elon University men’s tennis team struggled today, Feb. 23, in a 4-0 loss to 63rd-ranked East Tennessee State.

“We didn’t perform very well today,” said Elon coach #Michael Leonard#. I don’t want to take anything away from East Tennessee State. They’re a tough team, but we did not play with enough confidence today.”

Elon did take one doubles match on court No. 3 where #Jordan Kaufman# and #Juan Madrid# defeated Ricardo Pabon and Conner Huertas 8-7, but the Buccaneers took wins on the first two courts to take the doubles point.

The Buccaneers continued their dominance of the Phoenix in singles. Roger Ordeig made quick work of Madrid on court No. 6, 6-0, 6-2, while both #Stefan Fortmann# and #Cameron Silverman# were both defeated on court No. 3 and 1, respectively, to give East Tennessee State the match.

On court No. 2, #Robert Lindgren# came back after dropping his first set to force a third set. The junior was leading 1-0 in the final set before the match was called. Kaufman also forced a third set on court No. 5 after dropping the first set. His match did not finish, either.

#Brian Kowalski# was the only Elon player to win his first set in singles. The junior was leading in the second set, too, before the Buccaneers clinched the match.

The Phoenix returns to the courts tomorrow at 1 p.m. to take on No. 54 UNC Wilmington looking to rebound from the loss. Last time the Phoenix took on the Seahawks came in 2011 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Elon dropped the tightly contested match, 4-3.
