SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Guilford College’s Nick Shedd (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) shot a two-under 69 and teammate Tanner Gross (Archdale, N.C./Home School) a one-over 72 to help the Quakers open a 15-stroke lead after Monday’s first round of the Pine Needles Intercollegiate at the Pine Needles Golf and Lodge.

Shedd, bidding for a second-straight tournament title, matched the low round of his college career and tops a leader board loaded with Quakers. Guilford junior Drew Thompson, playing as an individual, shot 74 and sits in third place. Guilford’s Ty Palmer (Kernersville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) and Dallas Page (Reidsville, N.C./Rockingham County (Averett)) both carded 76 Monday and share seventh place with four others. The Quakers are ranked fourth in the latest Golfstat.com Division III Relative Ranking.

Cape Fear Community College (308) holds second place by three shots over Averett University (311). Hampden-Sydney College, ranked 10th by Golfstat.com, is in fourth after an opening-round 312.

The 36-hole tournament concludes Tuesday. Guilford is the defending tournament champion.
