HPU Women’s Golf’s Sarah Bae Leads The Country Club Of Spartanburg Spring Invitational After Day One

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman Sarah Bae of the High Point University women’s golf team leads the field at the Country Club of Spartanburg Spring Invitational after shooting \an opening-round 73 on Monday in Spartanburg, S.C. High Point sits in second in the team standings after carding a combined 302 in the second round.

“Sarah and Casey played very well today,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “They both struck the ball extremely well. Tan also played well and I look for all three of them to play even better tomorrow. Overall, the team played alright, but they are showing signs of playing much better. I feel like tomorrow could be a great day.”

Bae leads a group of three golfers, including teammate Casey Ward, by one stroke after one round of action. Sophomore Tan Cheeranont sits in a tie for seventh after shooting a four-over 76 in the first round while freshman Danielle Fuss is tied for 18th with an opening round 79. Junior Grier Bennett struggled in the round and ends the day in 29th with an 82. Senior Margaret Suchan competed as an individual and is in 23rd after the first day with an opening-round 80.

Ward is tied with Gardner-Webb’s Taylor Dodson and Julia Henderson for second, one stroke behind Bae. Mary Katherine Donovan of Gardner-Webb and Maegan Higgins are both tied for fifth, two-strokes behind Bae.

Gardner-Webb sits atop the team standings with a combined score of 300 after the first day. The Runnin’ Bulldogs leads by two strokes over High Point. Host Wofford is in third after the first round with a score of 305 and Winthrop is in fourth with a score of 312. Presbyterian College (328) and The Citadel (335) round out the team standings.

Bae and High Point will return to the Country Club of Spartanburg on Tuesday for the second and final round of the Spring Invitational. The Panthers will begin teeing off at 11:12 a.m.
