Elon Women’s Tennis Phoenix to Host 49ers Wednesday Afternoon

ELON, N.C. – Looking for a fourth consecutive win Wednesday, Feb. 26, the Elon University women’s tennis team will welcome Charlotte to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center for a 2 p.m. match with the 49ers.

“We are looking forward to our match against Charlotte on Wednesday,” said Elon head coach Elizabeth Anderson. “We always have good battles with them and we’re looking forward to competing with them again.”

ELON vs. CHARLOTTE: In 12 matches against the 49ers, Elon holds a 5-7 record. But, the Phoenix has won four in a row against Charlotte, winning each of the last four years and five of the last six. Each of those four matches finished by a final score of 5-2.

LOOKING BACK: Though batting various bumps and bruises through the first matches of the season, Elon swept Radford 7-0 on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center to win its third match in a row. In her first singles action of the year, Viviana Stavreva clinched the win for the Phoenix while Bryn Khourybreezed to a 6-0, 6-0 sweep and Tolley Rice improved to 3-0 on her young collegiate career with a 6-0, 6-2 win.

ON A ROLL: After dropping its first four matches of the season, Elon has won three straight and is looking to continue its streak against the 49ers. Last season, the Phoenix had two double-digit winning streaks. The Phoenix won 11 in a row to start the season 11-1. After dropping two consecutive matches, the Phoenix won 10 in a row before falling to College of Charleston in the Southern Conference tournament finals.

FRIENDLY CONFINES: Dating back to the start of the 2013 spring season, Elon holds a 13-3 record at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Its last regular season loss at home came March 14, 2013, against UNC Greensboro.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Phoenix opens its final season of Southern Conference action Saturday, March 1, at 12 p.m. against Georgia Southern. The match will conclude Elon’s five-match homestand, the longest of the season for the Phoenix.
