SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The High Point University women’s golf team shot a combined 311 on Tuesday to move past Gardner-Webb and claim the team title with a total score of 613 at the Country Club of Spartanburg Spring Invitational on Tuesday in Spartanburg, S.C.
“I am extremely happy that the girls were able to pull out the win,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “I am very pleased with how the team closed the day. We had six birdies in the last five holes. Sarah ended up in second and even though I know she was disappointed. I was proud that she kept it together, hung in there and made a great put on the last hole for tie for second. Tan played great today; she had a couple shots that were just outstanding. Grier showed great leadership with three birdies in the last four holes.”
Sophomore Tan Cheeranont had the low score of the day for the Panthers, carding a 75 for the round. Cheeranont finished tied for fourth in the tournament with a 36-hole score of 151.
Freshman Sarah Bae was the Panthers’ top finisher in the event, scoring 150 in the two rounds to finish tied for second. Bae shot 77 on Tuesday and finished one-stroke back of the individual medal winner.
Sophomore Casey Ward shot an 81 in the second round and finished tied for 10th with a total score of 155 while junior Grier Bennett carded a 78 to move up into a tie for 19th. Freshman Danielle Fuss struggled on the day with a score of 85 to finish the two-day event in a tie for 28th with a score of 164. Senior Margaret Suchan competed as an individual and finished in a tie for 19th with a two-day score of 160.
High Point claimed its third team title of the season with a total score of 613. The Panthers finished two-strokes ahead of day-one leader Gardner-Webb. Host Wofford finished in third with a score of 617 and Winthrop finished fourth with a score of 628. Presbyterian College (648) and The Citadel (664) rounded out the team standings.
Gardner-Webb’s Julia Henderson claimed the individual medal with a two-round score of 149. Henderson finished one-stroke ahead of Bae and GWU’s Taylor Dodson.
High Point returns to action next week when the team heads to Kiawah Island, S.C., to play in the Edwin Watts Classic. The three-day event will begin on Sunday, March 2, and will be played at the Kiawah Island Resort.
