CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Former Elon women’s basketball standout Holly Andrews ’04 has been named to the Big South 2000-09 Women’s Basketball All-Decade Team the conference announced today, Feb. 26.
As part of the Big South’s 30th Anniversary in 2013-14, the conference released its first-ever All-Decade Teams to recognize the student-athletes and coaches who excelled in their respective sport since the Conference’s founding in 1983. Andrews, who was inducted into the Elon Athletics Hall of Fame last fall, was one of 10 players selected to the all-decade team. Elon was a member of the Big South from 1999 – 2003.
While at Elon, Andrews earned Big South Player of the Year honors in 2001-02 and was a two-time first-team All-Big South honoree and an All-Southern Conference selection in her career in the maroon and gold. At the conclusion of her career, Andrews ranked among Elon’s career top 10 in points (5th, 1,403), points per game (6th, 13.8 ppg in 102 contests), field goals made (8th, 496), field goals attempted (6th, 1,344), three-point field goals made (2nd, 154), three-point field goals attempted (2nd, 446), three-point field goal percentage (1st, 34.5), free throws made (6th, 257), free throw percentage (2nd, 78.4), assists (9th, 214) and blocks (6th, 48). Nearly a decade later, Andrews still holds spots on the career chart in points (7th), points per game (7th), field goals made (10th), field goals attempted (7th), three-pointers made (3rd), three-point attempts (4th), three-point percentage (3rd), free throws made (8th) and free throw percentage (3rd). Andrews was a part of Elon’s first SoCon team and netted a career-high 35 points in the program’s first league win, a 79-75 decision at Appalachian State. The 35 point-performance is tied for the fourth-most points ever by an Elon player in a game. Her personal-best 13 free throws made in a win over William & Mary are tied for the third-highest free throw total by an Elon player and she twice matched a school record by going 11-for-11 from the charity stripe in a contest. Andrews, who was a two-time recipient of Elon’s Stein H. Basnight Award presented to the top female athlete at the university, was a Big South All-Rookie Team selection in 2000-01. Her senior campaign was cut short due to an ACL injury. At that time, she was leading the SoCon with 18.9 points per game. The Hudson, N.C., native was ranked as high as 23rd in the nation in scoring that season and collected two SoCon Player of the Month honors.
A committee of Big South Conference administrators served as the official voting panel to determine the All-Decade Teams, with fan voting comprising 20 percent of the overall total. Basketball All-Decade Team candidates were determined based on being at least one of the following: 1) Was a multiple All-Conference honoree; 2) Was named an All-American; 3) Is a member of the Big South Conference Hall of Fame; 4) Student-athletes must be a college graduate or left their respective institution in good academic standing; 5) Won a Conference Championship as a coach and/or was voted Conference Coach of the Year; and 6) Players of the Year, Tournament MVPs and First-Team All-Conference honorees were among the candidate pool for the 1985-89 All-Decade Teams. Candidates that participated in two different decades were placed in a specific decade based on consultation from member institutions. Member institutions also had final determination in regards to inclusion of student-athletes and coaches.
