Elon Women’s Tennis Wins Fourth Straight Against Charlotte

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team earned its third sweep in four matches today, Feb. 26, in beating Charlotte 7-0 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

“We played really well and showed a lot of heart,” said Elon head coach Elizabeth Anderson. “The girls were playing a little bit out of position but our doubles looked really good today. We still have a few things we need to work on but we’re really excited to open Southern Conference play Saturday against Georgia Southern.”

The Phoenix got off and running in winning the doubles point with 8-2 wins on both court No. 2 and 3. Bryn Khoury and Taylor Casey earned a victory on court No. 3 over Jessica Perez and Macy Vonderschmidt, thenFrida Jansaker and Maria Camara Ruiz finished minutes later with a win over Victoria Pahlett and Natsuko Takayanagi.

Barbora Lazarova kept Elon’s roll going in singles as she defeated Lisa Grosselius on court No. 2, 6-0, 6-3, to give Elon a 2-0 lead. Tolley Rice then increased the lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court No. 4 against Tyler Baker.

Camara Ruiz clinched Elon’s fourth consecutive victory on court No. 6 with a 6-3, 7-5 win against Perez.

Jordan Johnston extended the lead to 5-0 with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win on court No. 1 against Pahlett, then Casey made it 6-0 Elon with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win over Vonderschmidt on court No. 5.

Bryn Khoury was the only Elon player to drop her respective first set on the afternoon, but the senior recovered on court No. 3 against Takayanagi to take the second set and ultimately the third set tiebreaker, 5-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7).

Elon returns to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Saturday, March 1, to open SoCon play against Georgia Southern at 12 p.m. The match is Elon’s final contest of its second-long five-match homestand.
