RALEIGH, N.C.—Marty Wilcox drove in six runs on the afternoon, including a grand slam home run, in Guilford College’s doubleheader sweep of William Peace University Wednesday afternoon. The Quakers took game one, 10-0, and won the nightcap, 10-5, which was called after four innings due to darkness.
Wilcox’s grand slam came in the top of the third inning in game one after Taylor Boyd reached on an error to drive in a run. Boyd would produce yet again in the top of the sixth with a RBI-single to increase the lead, 7-0.
Guilford capped the game with a three-run rally in the top of the seventh inning with a pair of RBI-doubles from Cynthia Hayes (Seagrove, N.C./Southwestern Randolph) and Calli Pastor. Brooks Bray (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) added a RBI-single.
Casey Snead (2-0) took the complete-game shut-out victory, surrendering just six hits while striking out four.
Boyd’s production did not stop in game two as she would drive in the game’s first run with a RBI-single in the top of the first inning to claim her third RBI of the afternoon. Wilcox added to the lead, 2-0, with a RBI-single of her own and later scored the inning’s third run on a passed ball. The Quakers padded their lead in the top of the second inning when Boyd reached on an error to drive in a run.
William Peace countered in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of RBI-singles from Jennibeth Burge and Morgan Bryant to narrow the Quaker margin, 4-2.
The Quakers countered with Bray’s second RBI-single of the day in the top of third inning. Hayes would add to the rally with a two-RBI single to end her day with three RBI. Wilcox drew a walk for her sixth RBI of the day, adding to her team-leading season total of 16. Pastor capped the rally by reaching on an error, bringing home two runs to increase the lead, 10-2.
The Pacers countered with a pair of RBI walks from Burge and Brandi Stamey in the bottom of the third inning. Bryant added her second RBI-single of game two to cut the Quaker lead, 10-5. The Pacers put two more runners on base in the bottom of the fourth before Pastor induced a fly out, representing the game’s final out due to darkness.
Rebekah Langston (3-0) took the win, throwing two and two-thirds innings and surrendering four earned runs on six hits while striking out four batters. Pastor threw the final one and a third innings giving up no runs on three hits and striking out two batters.
The Quakers return to action Sunday, traveling to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face Salem College in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
