Greensboro College Pride Women Fall In USA South Quarter-Final To LaGrange

FERRUM, VA—The Greensboro College women’s basketball team fell in the USA South Conference Tournament quarter finals on Thursday afternoon to the Panthers of LaGrange by a 68-58 score.

LaGrange opened the game on a 14-0 run before the Pride got on the board with a long three pointer by Marla Crawford making the score 14-3 with 11:08 to play in the first period. The Panthers would maintain the large margin until the Pride used a 11-1 run to within three at 21-18 with 2:27 showing on the game clock. Syerra Troutman got the run started for Greensboro, then three others found the books as Amber Hair closed out the run. The Panthers then connected on two foul shots to pull out to a five point lead, but the Pride closed out the half on a 7-0 run to take a 25-23 lead into the halftime break.

Once the new period started, neither team was able to pull away at first until Greensboro established their largest lead of the game at 38-31 five minutes into the new frame. The Pride was unable to hold on to the lead as LaGrange was able to come back and force the fourth tie of the game at 42-42 halfway into the second half. The Panthers then continued to pull away from the Pride and Greensboro could not get any closer than three points of the remainder of play.

Greensboro College had an outstanding effort on the day by Syerra Troutman who posted a game high 18 points on 8 of 10 shooting to go along with five rebounds. Shanita Hampton also chipped in double digit points in the game with 13 while adding a team high seven boards. The Pride was able to force 21 Panther miscues, but was only able to turn them into 11 offensive points.

With the loss, the Pride closes out their 2013-2014 season with a 20-6 overall record. With Greensboro College’s 20 win season, it marks the third time in the past five years that they have been able to record at least 20 victories.
