Local College Girls/Womens Basketball:Impact 20-win seasons

In college basketball winning 20 games or more in a season is considered a pretty good job well done. Or, if a team has made tremendous strides from one season to the next. Below are local basketball girls whom teams have made great strides and their impact has been felt.

20 WINS OR MORE TEAMS:

1. North Carolina A&T University: MEAC CONFERENCE (21-4 and 11-2 conference) Christina Carter, (Thomasville High: VCU/A&T) A starter whom transfered from VCU has had a major impact on Coach Robinson’s squad at the point guard position. She has done a gret job of leading the transitional fast breaks and controlling the tempo. Her ability to find the open person has been unequal while dishing out 5.5 apg and scoring 8.5 ppg in conference play. She is presently shooting 35.3% fg, 44% ft, 32.6% in three pointers. Kenya Hailey (Southeast Guilford) a reserve that has saw spot duty is averaging 1.8 ppg, 2.4 rpg while shooting 31% in conference play. Mia Rudd(East Forsyth) recently had a career high of 3 points in a win against North Carolina Central. The Aggies have won 7 straight games. The Aggies have a big game against Hampton coming up after they face Savannah Sate on Saturday.

2. Stony Brook University: AMERICAN EAST CONFERENCE (21-7 and 11-3 conference) Miranda Jenkins (Eastern Guilford) A starter whom impact has been greatly appreciated now that she is nearly 100% recovered from her freshmen injury. The Seawolves has set a school record of 21 wins after tying it at 20 from the previous game. SBU record was 4-26 during her freshmen year which she sat out and went 14-16 last year when she played only 37 minutes while on the mend. Jenkins has been considered the glue by Coach Beth O’boyle and by her teammates as she sets the tone for them defensively with her energy and her ability to be a shut down defender on opposing teams top guards scorers. During conference play she is averaging 8.8 ppg (44.7% fg) and shoots 84.3% free throws. Recently on ESPN3 when the team won their 21st record setting win she scored 14 points (5-8 fg) (4-4 ) from the charity stripe and grabbed 9 rebounds. Has now had three straight double figure scoring games and all wins for the Seawolves. SBU have won 6 straight games.

3. Florida Gulf Coast University: ATLANTIC CONFERENCE (20-7 and 14-1 conference) Whitney Knight (Winston Salem Reynolds) A starter that has been an impact she her arrival on the Florida sunny beaches. Her freshmen year was awesome as she averaged nearly 8 ppg and created a large presence at the guard spot by being 6’3. She was hurt during last year and had to redshirt. This year she is back and the team is still winning. FGCU will win the conference and conference championship and will appear in the NCAA Tournament. Whitney is averaging 12.1 ppg and 2.9 bpg in conference play. She is shooting 39% from the field .FGCU made a good run during her freshmen year and could make that run again and Whitney presence will be greatly needed. FGCU have won 6 straight games.

4.Winthrop University : BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE (20-7 and 14-4 conference) Ronata Rogers (Greensboro Day) A reserve whom is not an impact player yet. Has seen playing time sparingly which is usually the case with freshmen. The team is already led by season veterans that do a great job. Rogers is shooting 40% from the field and 37.5% from the charity stripe. Winthrop will be one of the favorites to win the conference or conference tournament but High Point University is knocking on the door.

15 TO 19 GAME WINNERS:

1. High Point University: BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE (18-9 and 14-4 conference) Lindsay Puckett (Rockingham/Marshall) a reserve that has started is providing Coach Hendrix with and impact coming off the bench that is able to provide some scoring when the offense has become staganet. A veteran that has the Know how. She is averaging around 6 ppg and shooting 36.4% from the field and 77.8% from the charity stripe. Jatmin Johnson (Thomasville Prep) a reserve whom rarely plays averages 1.0 ppg and 27.8% from the field. Highpoint could win the Big South tournament if they do not get upset in the early round.

2.Campbell University BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE (17-10 and 12-6 conference) Amanda Coffer (Northern Guilford) a reserve that has provided a spark with block shots. She is averaging 3.9 ppg and shooting 37.9% from the field and 61.9% from the charity stripe. Jessica pone is averaging 2.8 ppg in limited playing time. Campbell is capable of reaching the semi-final round or the championship game if Winthrop or HPU falters.

BELOW 15 GAME WINNERS:

1. South Carolina Upstate University : ALANTIC CONFERENCE: (13-12 and 8-6 conference) Brittany Clency (Western Guilford) A starter whom team is trending in the right direction by surpassing last years win totals. Brittany is averaging13.5 ppg and shooting 37% from the field and 72.9% from the charity stripe in conference play.

2. Gardner Webb University: BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE : (13-13 and 9-9 conference) Catrina Green (Western Guilford) a starter with another solid performance . Averaging 14.1 ppg and 10.8 rpg as she mans the post. A dangerous team going into the tournament.

3. Elon University: SOUTHERN CONFERENCE: (13-14 and 9-7 conference) Samantha Coffer (Northern Guilford) a starter whom is averaging 9.4 ppg and 6.5 rpg during conference play and shooting 44.3% from the field. Lanaira Ruffin (Rivermill Academy) a reserve is averaging 3.3 ppg and 35% from the field in conference play. Autumn Carter (Rockingham) a reserve averaging 2.9 ppg, 44% free throw and 38.35 from the field. Could make a run in conference tournament if everyone plays their best game.

4. UNC Ashville University: BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE: (10-17 and 7-11 conference) Brittany Gwynn (Highpoint Central) a starter whom is averaging 8.9 ppg and shooting 29% from the field and 82% from the charity stripe. Team has improved over last year.

5. Radford University: BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE: ( 7-20 AND 5-13 conference) Kierra Mcivor (Dudley) a starter whom is averaging 5.7 ppg and shooting 55.9% from the charity stripe and 37% from the field. Team has won some good games lately and should feel good going into the tournament. Could be that sleeper that knocks off one of the higher rank teams in the conference tournament.

6.UNCG University: SOUTHERN CONFERENCE: (7-20 and 3-13 conference)Breonna Patterson a reserve that has not played in the last six games. She was averaging 4 ppg during conference play. A young team that has promise.
