ELON, N.C. – Winners of its last four matches, the Elon University women’s tennis team opens Southern Conference play Saturday, March 1, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center against Georgia Southern.

FRIENDS OF JACLYN: On Saturday, both the men’s and women’s tennis teams are playing in support of the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation to raise awareness of pediatric brain tumors. LOOKING BACK: Last time out, Elon earned its fourth win of the season against the Charlotte 49ers at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The win was the fifth consecutive victory for the Phoenix against Charlotte and the sixth in the last seven matches between the two. Elon swept Charlotte, marking the second straight sweep for the Phoenix and third in four matches.

STREAKING PHOENIX: After dropping its first four matches of the season, Elon has won four straight and is looking to continue its streak against the Eagles. Last season, the Phoenix had two double-digit winning streaks. The Phoenix won 11 in a row to start the season 11-1. After dropping two consecutive matches, the Phoenix won 10 in a row before falling to College of Charleston in the Southern Conference tournament finals.

ON A ROLL: Jordan Johnston, Barbora Lazarova and Tolley Rice have been on fire of late for the Phoenix, as each is on individual four-match winnings streaks in singles. Frida Jansaker and Bryn Khoury are not far behind, as Jansaker has won three straight while Khoury is 4-1 in her last five matches.

FRIENDLY CONFINES: Dating back to the start of the 2013 spring season, Elon holds a 14-3 record at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Its last regular season loss at home came March 14, 2013, against UNC Greensboro.

JANSAKER HONORED: Jansaker became the fourth Elon athlete throughout the 2013-2014 academic year to be named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week on Feb. 19. The honor came after Jansaker won her doubles match against UNC Wilmington Feb. 17 and helped Elon come from behind against the Seahawks to win the match with a victory at No. 2 singles. Nathan Dean of the men’s soccer team, Sam Coffer of the women’s basketball team and Brian Kowalski of the men’s tennis team are the other three Elon athletes to earn the award.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Phoenix steps back out of conference for two matches against East Carolina on Thursday, March 6, at 2 p.m. in Greenville, N.C., then again on Tuesday, March 11, at home against Gardner-Webb at 2:30 p.m. before returning to SoCon action Saturday, March 15, against Davidson.
