Greensboro College Pride Softball Pushes Win Streak To Six With Sweep of Covenant

LOOKOUT MTN., GA—The Greensboro College softball team continued USA South play on Friday afternoon at Covenant College who is in their first season as a USA South Conference member. In the first game of the day, the Pride pulled away for a 7-2 victory before taking the second game 8-4 in eight innings.

Greensboro was able to strike early in the first game of the day when Jackie Nicholson hit a two run home run to right center scoring Brittany Rush giving the Pride a 2-0 lead after a half inning of play. The two run lead for Greensboro did not stay at two for long as the Scots pulled within 2-1 in the bottom half of the first inning.

The score would remain the same until Allyson Yeager singled to left field plating Sarah Tompkins for the third run of the game giving Greensboro the 3-1 lead. Later inning the Pride was able to put another run on the board following a Lauren Miller sacrifice fly scoring Rae Hall giving Greensboro a 4-1 heading to the bottom half of the fourth inning.

Greensboro College added another insurance run in the top half of the seventh inning when Brittany Rush doubled to left field scoring Chelsea Brewer extending their lead to 5-1. After Brewer scored, the Pride was able to add two more runs headed to the bottom half of the seventh inning. The Scots were able to push one across in the bottom of the seventh, but the Pride was able to hold them off for the 7-2 victory.

Kelsey Sanfilippo (2-1) took the win for Greensboro, while Rae Hall led the way for the Pride at the plate going 2-3 at the plate with one RBI. Jackie Nicholson led the way for Greensboro, collecting two of the seven RBI’s in the game.

In the second part of the double header, Covenant got on the board first with a two run homerun giving the Scots a 2-0 after one inning of play. The Scots would add another run in the bottom of the second inning pulling out to a 3-0 lead before Greensboro could get on the board in the second game. Greensboro College trimmed the deficit to 3-1 when Madison Crisco found the outfield grass scoring Sarah Tompkins. The Pride would continue to threat for the rest of the inning but could not push another run across the plate.

The Pride was able to retire the Scots in order in the bottom half of the fourth inning to keep the score at 3-1 heading into the top half of the fifth inning. In the visitors half of the fifth, Greensboro was able to strike again as Sarah Connolly sent a ball over the left field wall making the score 3-2 in favor of Covenant. The Scots were able to extend back out to a two run lead with an RBI in the bottom half of the inning making the score 4-2.

After Rae Hall singled to open the top of the sixth inning, Madison Crisco tied the game up a 4-4 with one swing of the bat putting the first pitch of her at bat over the left field wall. The game remained tied through the regulation amount of innings, forcing the teams to go into extra frames.

In the top half of the eighth inning, Rae Hall was placed on second base to start the inning before coming around to score on a Dawn Harris RBI single with one out putting the Pride up 5-4. Later in the inning, Brittany Rush picked up her first RBI of the game pushing the Pride up 6-4. Greensboro College was able to load up the bases later in the inning, before Sarah Connolly’s infield single gave Greensboro a three run lead at 7-4. Greensboro continued to add to their lead in the eight scoring one last time to take a commanding four run lead into the bottom half of the inning at 8-4. Greensboro College was able to retire the side in the bottom half of the eighth, preserving the 8-4 victory.

Greensboro College collected eight runs on 15 hits in the second game, with Sarah Connolly leading the way with three hits and two RBIs. The Pride also got two hits in the game from Chelsea Brewer, Rae Hall, and Madison Crisco who led the way with 3 RBIs.

Kelsey Sanfilippo picked up her second win on the day throwing all eight innings while collecting six strikeouts.

With the two wins, the Pride have won six games in a row moving to 8-4 overall on the season and a perfect 4-0 in USA South play. Greensboro will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Lynchburg College to take on the Hornets. The first game of the double header is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
