College Men’s Basketball Final – Washington and Lee 77, Guilford 70

SALEM, Va. – Senior Drew Kimberly scored a game-high 24 points and Andrew Franz added 17 points and 10 rebounds in Washington and Lee University’s 77-70 upset of Guilford College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Basketball Tournament quarterfinals Friday night.

The 11th-seeded Generals (8-19) continue their improbable ODAC Tournament run Saturday with a semifinal contest Saturday (3/1) versus second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan College, a 91-70 winner over number-seven Bridgewater College earlier Friday at the Salem Civic Center. Washington and Lee upended sixth-seeded Randolph College, 66-62, in Tuesday’s opening-round contest.

Washington and Lee raced to a 12-0 lead and never looked back. The 6-8 Kimberly and 6-5 Franz both had 14 first-half points and helped the Generals outscore Guilford in the paint, 18-2, in the opening 20 minutes. Washington and Lee shot 56 percent from the floor in the period, which led to a 41-30 advantage. The Quakers missed their first four shots before Josh Spainhour’s three-pointer 3:34 into the game got Guilford on the board. The Quakers shot 32.3% from the floor in the first half.

Guilford made a couple of second-half runs, but the Generals held the Quakers off. Jim Etling’s two free throws six minutes into the half opened a 52-36 lead, Washington and Lee’s largest of the game. Trever Hyatt’s three-pointer capped a 16-5 Guilford run and pulled the Quakers to within 57-52 with 7:05 left in regulation. The Generals reeled off the next eight points, six by Kimberly, and regained a 65-52 edge with 4:50 remaining.

Guilford clamped down on defense and held the Generals without a field goal the rest of the way. A Jake Hopkins three-pointer and inside baskets by Zeb Richardson and Matt McCarthy helped the Quakers rally to within 74-70 with 38 seconds left. The comeback stopped there, however, as Washington and Lee made three-of-four free throws in the final 32 seconds.

Kevin Gill made two free throws with 19 seconds left and scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half. He and Kimberly both grabbed eight rebounds, which helped the Generals enjoy a 42-35 rebounding edge.

Guilford’s Richardson paced the Quakers with 17 points in 22 minutes off the bench. Hopkins, the Quakers’ lone senior, finished with 12 points, all in the second half, and a club-high nine rebounds. Hyatt, McCarthy and Furr each scored nine points.

The loss ends third-seeded Guilford’s season with a 17-9 overall record, their eighth straight winning season.
