College Softball Finals—-Guilford 7—7, Salem 2—4

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—Guilford College improved their overall record to 11-1 with a doubleheader sweep of Salem College Sunday afternoon. The Quakers took game one, 7-2, and won the nightcap, 7-4.

The Quakers struck first in game one when Cynthia Hayes (Seagrove, N.C./Southwestern Randolph) and Laura Hall successfully executed a double steal, with Hayes scoring to take the early advantage. Rachel Howard then hit a two-run home run for her second home run of the season to put the Quakers ahead, 3-0.

The Quakers picked up the rally in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a Calli Pastor RBI-double. Guilford widened the lead with a three-run rally in the top of the sixth inning. Caroline Barnette and Maggie Shaffer both reached on errors to bring in one run a piece while Howard scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead, 7-0.

Salem’s Lauryn Smith put the Spirits on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly while Morgan Coleman added a RBI-single.

Maggie Shaffer (5-1) picked up the complete-game win, scattering two runs on six hits while striking out five batters.

Steffi Sides picked up the Quaker offense in game two with a RBI-double in the top of the second inning. Hayes would ground out to drive in a run to claim the lead, 2-1. Game two starting pitcher Rebekah Langston helped her own cause with a RBI-single in the top of the third inning. Hayes scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth to increase the lead, 4-1.

Salem used a pair of doubles over the next two innings to tie the game. Kristi Morton hit her RBI-double in the bottom of the fourth inning. Allie Watkins followed in the bottom of the fifth inning with two-RBI double to tie the game, 4-4.

Hall broke the tie for the Quakers in the top of the seventh with a RBI-single. Marty Wilcox followed with a sacrifice fly for her 17th RBI of the season, leading the team. Pastor picked up her second RBI on the day with a single to provide insurance for the Quaker lead, 7-4.

Langston threw four innings while giving up two runs on four hits and striking out one batter. Casey Snead (3-0) took the win, relieving Langston in the bottom of the fifth inning giving up two runs on three hits while striking out three batters.

The Quakers return home Wednesday, hosting North Carolina Wesleyan College at 2 p.m.
