HPU’s Wallace Named Big South Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point University junior Devante Wallace was named Big South Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Sunday. Wallace averaged 17.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in leading the Panthers to a 2-0 week and the outright Big South regular-season championship.

In HPU’s three-point win over VMI on Wednesday, Wallace scored 16 points and grabbed five boards while shooting 54.5 percent from the field.

Wallace got his second career double-double in High Point’s regular-season clinching win over Campbell on Friday on ESPNU. He scored 18 points with 10 rebounds while shooting 6-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-6 from three-point range.

For the week, Wallace was 12-of-20 from the field (60.0 percent), 5-of-9 from long range (55.6 percent) and made 5-of-6 free throw attempts (83.3 percent).

Wallace was one of the key pieces of High Point’s regular-season title this season as he averaged 15.1 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting a Big South-high 59.3 percent (51-for-86) from three-point range in Big South games. In 29 overall games, Wallace averaged 12.6 points and 4.6 rebounds while shooting 46.4 percent from the floor and 50.0 percent from three-point range.

High Point next plays in the Big South Tournament quarterfinals on Friday at noon at Coastal Carolina’s HTC Center. High Point is the No. 1 North seed and will play the winner of Liberty/Winthrop first-round game on Wednesday.

High Point is the first team ever to start conference play 0-2 and go on to win the regular season (outright or shared). It’s HPU’s first outright Big South regular-season title and High Point earned the conference’s automatic NIT bid.
