KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. — A second-round 315 by the Elon women’s golf team moved the Phoenix into 12th place out of 36 teams at the Kiawah Island Classic hosted by College of Charleston on Monday. The maroon and gold has posted a two-round score of 616 (301-315).
Over its second 18 holes of the tournament, Elon was paced by Sunna Vidisdottir who will begin Tuesday’s third and final round in a tie for 23rd out of the 192 golfers in the field. Vidisdottir carded a second-round mark of 76 which, coupled with her first-round 75, gives her a two-round total of 151. On Monday, Vidisdottir had one birdie. Her 27 pars through two rounds are the second-most in the field.
Just two shots back in a tie for 38th is Emily Brooks. Brooks reached her 153 (74-79) after a round which included birdies on the par-three ninth, the par-five 12th and the par-three 15th holes on Monday.
Kelsey Badmaev sits in a tie for 48th with a two-day score of 154 (75-79). Badmaev recorded one birdie on Monday as she holed out in two strokes on the par-three 11th hole.
With a mark of 158 (77-81), Katie Partridge will enter the final round in a tie for 78th. She also had one birdie – posting a four on the par-five fourth hole.
Rounding out the five competing for the team was Taylor Wilkerson who is tied for 155th with a score of 171 (88-83).
Playing as an individual, Kathryn Buckingham is tied for 48th following two rounds with a 154 (77-77). Buckingham ended her second round with birdies on the par-five first and eighth holes along with a birdie on the par-four fifth hole.
Only one player is under par after two rounds. Leading the field at two-under is UNCG’s Sammie Buchanan (70-72–142).
The 36-team field is being paced by 37th-rated Kent State. The Golden Flashes hold a five-stroke edge over their nearest competitor after ending the day with a tournament mark of 594 (292-302).
The remainder of the top five consists of High Point (300-299–599), Jacksonville State (292-309–601), St. John’s (292-310–602) and Penn State (300-303–603).
Four other SoCon schools are also in the field. Chattanooga (297-311–608) sits 10th, Samford (302-319–621) is 14th, UNCG (312-336–648) is 26th and The Citadel (342-331–679) ended Monday in 32nd place.
As one of the top 19 teams after two rounds, Elon will compete on the Cougar Point course for the tournament championship on Tuesday.
