HPU Women’s Golf Tied For Seventh At The Edwin Watts Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The High Point University women’s golf team finished day one of the Edwin Watts Classic in a tie for seventh place out of 36 teams after shooting a combined 300 at the Cougar Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. on Sunday. Sophomore Casey Ward carded an even-par 72 to lead the Panthers.

“As a whole I was pleased with the way we played today,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “I saw a lot of good thing from all the girls out there. Casey played really steady the whole day and Grier hit some really good shots and got a few birdies. I think we are ready for tomorrow and I am looking forward to seeing them go out and improve on today’s results.”

Ward shot three birdies and finished the day in a tie for seventh, three-shots back of the day-one leader. Fellow sophomore Tan Cheeranont and junior Grier Bennett both turned in scores of 75 to tie for 35th.

Freshman Sarah Bae tied for 76th with a score of 78 and freshman Danielle Fuss shot a 90 to tie for 115th. Senior Margaret Suchan played as an individual and finished the day in a tie for 120th with a score of 82.

Troy sits atop the team standings after one round with a combined score of 291. Jacksonville State, Kent State and St. John’s are all tied for second with a combined score of 292. North Florida rounds out the top five with a score of 295.

Three players are tied for the individual lead after the first day. Troy’s Taylor McGraw, Kent State’s Wad Phaewchimplee and St. John’s Anna Kim all carded scores of 69 on the first day and lead by one stroke. Jacksonville State’s Maya Parsons and UNC Greensboro’s sammie Buchanan are both one shot back of the trio

High Point will play the second round of the Edwin Watts Classic at the Oak Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C., on Monday, March 3. The team will begin play at 9 a.m.
