Stalzer Repeats as SoCon Men’s Baseball Pitcher of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — After throwing the program’s first complete game shutout in over three seasons, Elon left-handed pitcher Jake Stalzer has repeated as the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week the league announced on Monday, March 3.

Stalzer is just the second Elon pitcher to ever claim back-to-back SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors, joining Steven Hensley who collected the accolades on April 3 and 10 in 2006.

This week, Stalzer improved his record to 3-0 on they year with a complete game shutout of Gardner-Webb in which he threw just 100 pitches. In Sunday’s 5-0 victory over Gardner-Webb, Stalzer allowed just three hits and struck out a career-best five hitters while facing just 33 hitters. The complete game shutout was the first for Elon since Jimmy Reyes blanked Samford 1-0 in the Southern Conference Tournament on May 26, 2010. The three hits allowed marked the fewest allowed by Elon since Feb. 18, 2012, in a 4-1 win over George Mason when the Phoenix surrendered three hits.

The lefty from Albia, Iowa has yet to allow an earned run in 23.0 innings this year and has not allowed any run in 22.2 consectutive innings of work. Opponents have been held to just a .156 batting average against Stalzer in his three starts this season.
