Charlotte, NC – February 10, 2014 – Providence Day School will host the 2014 Upward North Carolina Private School All-Star Basketball Game on Saturday, March 8th, 2014. It will feature some of the top senior boys and girls basketball players in the state of North Carolina.
Over 100 players were nominated by head coaches and Athletic Director’s from across the state of North Carolina. Selection committees worked to narrow the rosters down to 24 players in each game that represent all classifications and regions of the state.
The boy’s game will feature 14 players that have already signed scholarships to play college basketball next season, and several more players that anticipate signing scholarships later on this spring. In addition, Jerry Faulkner, the former Charlotte Latin coach will be coaching the West team, and David Carrier, currently at Kerr-Vance Academy, will be coaching the East team. Coach Faulkner spent 23 years at Charlotte Latin and collected nine 3A state championships and over 700 career wins. He has the third most wins of any high school coach in North Carolina history, and served as the Head Coach of the 2001 McDonald’s All American game. Coach Carrier won two 3A state championships at Providence Day in the late 1990’s before moving on to coach at 2A Kerr-Vance Academy in Henderson, NC. Overall, Coach Carrier has won over 350 games in his career and coached over 30 players that went on to play college basketball.
The girl’s game includes six players that have already signed to play at the college level. This includes McDonald’s All-American, Jatarie White, who is the reigning NC Gatorade Player of the Year and has signed to play next season at the University of South Carolina. Fayetteville Christian’s Don Gardner will coach the East team. Since starting his coaching career in 2001, Coach Gardner has collected over 200 career wins, including the 2008 1A state championship while he was the head coach at Trinity Christian. His teams from Trinity Christian and Fayetteville Christian have made the state tournament every year that he has been the coach. Jack Warren will coach the West squad. Jack has over 30 years of coaching experience, most of them in the NCISAA where he won two state championships in girl’s basketball while at Carolina Day School in Asheville, NC. Over his career, Jack has won numerous Coach of the Year honors. Jack has been the head girl’s coach at Cannon School since 2009.
The games will take place in Mosack Athletic Center on the campus of Providence Day School. The girl’s game will start at 1:00pm followed by the boy’s game at 2:30pm. Admission for the games will be $7 for adults, $5 for students, and children under the age of 8 will be admitted for free. Also, any youth that participates in an Upward Sports program and wears their Upward jersey to the game will be admitted at no charge.
In addition to the game, all players and coaches will participate in a community service project on the afternoon of Friday, March 7th in the Charlotte community.
