Elon Women’s Lacrosse Begins A-Sun Play in Rhodes Wednesday

ELON, N.C. – After posting its first win on Saturday, the Elon women’s lacrosse team (1-3) returns to Rhodes Stadium on Wednesday, March 5, for its first Atlantic Sun game against Detroit (0-3) at 7 p.m. On Saturday, March 8, the Phoenix travels to Coastal Carolina (1-2) for a 1 p.m. game.

Looking Back
Elon posted its first win in program history in the form of a 16-7 victory over Saint Francis in its first home game on Saturday. The Phoenix saw scores from eight different players, including five goals from Sloane Kessler and three from Sydney Hesselbein.

Atlantic Sun Play
Wednesday’s game is the first of Elon’s five-game A-Sun schedule. The Phoenix will host conference opponent Kennesaw State on April 13 before traveling to Howard, Stetson and Jacksonville State to close out the A-Sun slate.

Player of the Week
On March 3, the Atlantic Sun announced that attack Sloane Kessler had been named the A-Sun women’s lacrosse player of the week. The freshman led Elon to its first win in program history after registering six points with five goals and an assist in the team’s 16-7 win over Saint Francis last weekend. The Owings Mill, Md., native took seven shots in the game, all on frame, and also tallied two ground balls and a draw control in the victory.

Nationally Ranked
The NCAA released its latest set of national statistical rankings on Monday, March 3. Goalie Rachel Ramirez ranks fifth in the nation in saves with 41 on the season. She also ranks ninth in saves per game with a 10.25 mark.

Looking Ahead
Following this week’s games, the Phoenix will travel down I-40 to face reigning national champion and top-ranked North Carolina on Wednesday, March 12. The opening draw is set for 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
