Kaufman Named SoCon Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Jordan Kaufman of the Elon University men’s tennis team has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week by the league office today, March 4, for the matches played Feb. 24 through March 2.

During that stretch, Kaufman went 2-0 in singles against Brown and SoCon opponent Chattanooga. The junior also went 2-0 with doubles partner Cameron Silverman against the Bears and Mocs.

First against Brown on Feb. 28, Kaufman topped Sam Fife at No. 5 singles by a score of 6-2, 6-4 to help Elon build a critical 3-0 lead on Brown, as the Bears mounted a comeback but ultimately fell short with Stefan Fortmann stopping the bleeding to clinch the match with a win on court No. 4.

Kaufman and Silverman were instrumental in clinching the doubles point for the Phoenix against the Bears, as they won the deciding match on court No. 1, 8-5, over Lucas Da Silveira and Justin To to give Elon the early 1-0 lead.

A day later in the team’s SoCon opener against Chattanooga, Kaufman moved up to No. 4 singles and quickly dispatched John Peacey, 6-2, 6-0. The win helped Elon sweep the Mocs 7-0.

Kaufman and Silverman had a bit easier time in doubles against Peacey and Jorge Varon than they did the previous day. Instead of having to clinch the point for Elon, the duo worked quickly and topped the Mocs’ pairing quickly by a score of 8-2 to get the Phoenix running towards the sweep.

The honor marks the second time in three weeks an Elon player has won the award. Silverman won the season’s first Player of the Week award on Feb. 18.

Elon returns to action Saturday, March 9, for a 1 p.m. match with the Samford Bulldogs at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The match marks the first time Samford returns to Elon since defeating the Phoenix in the SoCon Tournament finals last April.
