High Point Women’s Lacrosse Cruises To 16-6 Road Win Over UMBC

CATONSVILLE, Md. – The High Point University women’s lacrosse team cruised to a 16-6 win at UMBC on Wednesday evening in Catonsville, Md. The Panthers’ 16 goals were the most by the team this season and helped snap the team’s two-game skid.

“I’m really proud of the way this team responded after the loss at Virginia Tech,” said head coach Lyndsey Boswell. “We worked extremely hard these past two weeks, which showed today. Today was a full team effort. We had had a lot of different scorers, which is a reflection of how hard these girls pushed each other every day in practice. The defense stepped up and made some big plays and Julia Burns made some huge saves to give us momentum in our transition.”

The Panthers received goals from 11 different players: Emily Meier, Alec Perry, Kendyl Gardner, Sara Kuhlman,Leah Pace, Stephanie Pazulski, Mackenzie Carroll, Christie Dougherty, Emilie Pugliese, Allie Foard and Abby Berrettone. Meier, Perry, Foard, Pugliese and Pazulski all finished with two goals in the contest while Kuhlman and Dougherty also registered three assists. It was the first goals of the year for Foard, Pazulski and Pace.

HPU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead when Sara Kuhlman found Emily Meier right in front of the net within the first minute of action for the first goal of the contest. The Panthers followed that up with a fast break goal brought on by a couple of quick passes that led to Mackenzie Carroll finding Alec Perry near the crease for a one on one with UMBC goalkeeper, Anna Barnett. Perry’s goal was her sixth of the season and Carroll’s second assist on the year, which gave her 192 points for her career. With the assist, Carroll passed Grace Gaeng’s previous HPU record of 191 career points. Carroll finished the game with 193 career points.

After jumping out to the early lead, HPU never looked back. Following a UMBC goal, the Panthers closed out the half on a 7-0 run to end the first period of play up 9-1. High Point continued its dominance in the second half scoring the first two goals in the second period before a UMBC goal broke the Panthers’ 9-0 run. High Point ended the game with two final goals in the last five minutes to close out the 16-6 win.

HPU outshot the Retrievers 28-13 including a 23-11 advantage in shots on goal. The Panthers’ defense was able to limit UMBC to just 5-for-13 in clear attempts in the game while HPU went 9-for-12 in clear attempts.

Julia Burns picked up her second win of the season in net for High Point. Burns made 5 saves while playing all 60 minutes in the cage for HPU.

High Point wraps up its four game road trip on Monday at Ohio State at 3 p.m. The Panthers fell to the Buckeyes in the regular-season finale last year 15-10. Perry and Gardner both recorded hat tricks for the Panthers in that contest.
