College Baseball Finals—Shenandoah 8—4, Guilford 2—4

WINCHESTER, Va.—Guilford College’s Corey Wallace and John Macon Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) extended their respective hitting streaks as the Quakers fell twice at Shenandoah University in a Sunday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader. The Hornets took game one, 8-2, and the nightcap, 4-2.

Smith finished the afternoon hitting 4-for-8 with a RBI in game two, extending his hitting streak to nine games. Wallace’s hit streak extended to ten games after producing a base hit in each game of the afternoon.

After Shenandoah took a 4-0 lead after five innings, Nathan Fulbright reached on a dropped pop fly in the top of the sixth inning with two outs to drive in two runs and cut the Hornets’ lead in half, 4-2.

Shenandoah countered in the bottom of the seventh inning when Michael Paul produced his second run scoring play of the day with a ground out to first base for his first RBI. John Wilt brought two runs home with a two-out, two-RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth inning. Billy Arens added to the two-out rally with a single to right center field the next at-bat for his third RBI of the game.

Borja Jones-Berasaluce (1-2) took the loss for the Quakers after throwing six innings and scattering two earned runs on eight hits while striking out four batters. Chad Wagoner threw the final two innings, striking out three batters.

Paul picked up his second RBI in game two for the Hornets with a RBI-single through the right side in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew Creamer increased the Hornet lead, 3-0, with a two-RBI single to center field. Shenandoah added to their lead, 4-0, in the bottom of the third inning when Arens reached on a fielding error.

The Quakers countered when Smith picked up his 18th RBI of the season in the top of the fourth inning with a single up the middle. Tyler Petersen cut the deficit further with a RBI-single through the right side.

Drew Crawford (1-2) took the loss for the Quakers after a five-inning outing, surrendering three earned runs on seven hits while striking out two batters. Nick Blackwood (Greensboro, N.C./Wesleyan Christian Academy) threw the final three innings giving up just one hit while striking out three batters.

The Quakers (8-9, 2-2 ODAC) return home Wednesday afternoon to host Lynchburg College at 3 p.m. in a re-scheduled ODAC contest.
