Greensboro College Women’s Softball Pride Win Two on First Day at The Rebel Games

Winter Haven, Fl—The Greensboro College Pride softball team opened up their spring trip to the Rebel Games in Winter Haven, Florida with a pair of wins. In the first game of the day, the Pride handed Kean University their first loss of the season 6-5 before topping Geneva College 5-3.

Kean was able to strike first in the opening half of the game with one run, but the Pride offense rushed right back with six runs taking a 6-1 after one complete inning. Chelesa Brewer was the first Greensboro player to cross the plate, before Allyson Yeager and Sarah Thomkins plated one run each making the score 3-1 in favor of the Pride. Later in the inning, Dawn Harris pushed across Tompkins and Yeager with a two out single pushing the Greensboro lead to 6-1.

The score remained the same until Kean was able to push across two runs in the top half of the fifth and seventh innings before Lauren Miller was able to close out the game preserving the 6-5 victory.

In the final game of the day Jackie Nicholson, Sarah Tompkins, and Madison Crisco help the Pride pull out the 5-3 victory accounting for six hits and three RBIs combined.

Nicholson got the Pride on the board first when she connected on a 1-1 pitch sending it out of the park putting Greensboro up 2-0 early. However, the Golden Tornadoes came back to tie the game in the bottom half of the second inning at 2-2.

Just two innings later, Geneva took their first lead of the game at 3-2 but Greensboro came back in the top of the sixth with one run evening the score at 3-3. In the sixth inning, Rae Hall picked up her first RBI of the day with a single following a leadoff double by Tompkins.

Greensboro College was able to retire the Golden Tornadoes in the bottom of the sixth inning forcing the game into the final inning of play. Dawn Harris led off the top half of the seventh inning, before coming around to score on a Nicholson single pushing the Pride in front 4-3. Greensboro College would add one last run in the inning, and was able to retire Geneva holding on for the 5-3 victory.

Dawn Harris picked up the win in the second game for the Pride tossing four innings in relief of starter Lauren Miller.

With the wins, Greensboro College improves their record to 10-8 overall. The Pride will return to action tomorrow for the second day of their 2014 Rebel Games trip. Greensboro is scheduled to face off against Westminster (PA) at 11:00 am before squaring off with Catholic at 1:00 pm.
