Elon Men’s Tennis Jumps Two Spots in ITA National Rankings

ELON, N.C. – With two convincing wins last week in Southern Conference play, the Elon University men’s tennis team jumped two spots in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings to No. 44, as announced by the ITA today, March 11.

Elon opened the weekend with a 7-0 sweep of Samford on Saturday, March 8, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. It was the second time the Phoenix and Bulldogs had met this season with Elon taking both matches. In the match, Cameron Silverman, now ranked No. 38 in the country, needed to come from behind against Elliot Barnwell on court No. 1, but the senior prevailed by winning the second and third sets, 6-2, 6-2. BothJuan Madrid and Stefan Fortmann breezed through their matches on the way to the win. Madrid won 6-1, 6-1 on court No. 6 and Fortmann won 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 4.

The Phoenix closed the weekend with a convincing 6-1 defeat of the Davidson Wildcats on Sunday, March 9, that saw Silverman, Madrid and Jordan Kaufman each sail to a win without dropping more than three games in the match. Silverman won 6-2, 6-1 on court No. 1, Madrid earned a 6-1, 6-0 win on court No. 6 and Kaufman picked up a 6-0, 6-2.

Elon returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. against Campbell University at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. This is the reschedule date after the match was originally postponed due to weather on Feb. 12.
