HPU’s Brown Named To NABC All-District First Team

Redshirt-sophomore John Brown of the High Point University men’s basketball team has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District first team, the NABC announced on Wednesday. Brown was Big South Player of the Year and leads HPU with 19.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

Brown, of Jacksonville, Fla., was named to the All-Big South first team for the second year in a row, following up on his Big South Preseason Player of the Year honor from last fall. He was named to the NABC All-District second team last year, when he was Big South Freshman of the Year.

Brown became the first player in Big South history to score 1,000 points before the end of his sophomore season, scoring 27 points to surpass the milestone in HPU’s win over VMI on Feb. 26. To date, Brown has totaled 1,044 over 58 career games, an average of 18.0 per game.

On the season, Brown averaged 2.0 assists, 1.7 blocks and 1.5 steals to go along with his 19.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Brown shot 54.3 percent from the floor and 74.3 percent from the free-throw line. In Big South games, Brown averaged 20.8 points and 8.0 rebounds.

He was named Big South Player of the Week three times this season.

High Point went 12-4 in Big South play and is 16-14 overall heading into the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), which begins next week. HPU is making its first appearance in the NIT after playing in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament last season. The NIT selection show is Sunday at 8:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
