Elon Phoenix Travels for Women’s Tennis Matches vs. Davidson, Wake Forest

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team will look to continue its winning ways on the road this weekend against the Davidson Wildcats tomorrow, March 15, and Wake Forest on Sunday, March 16.

ELON vs. DAVIDSON: Throughout the previous 12 matchups between the Phoenix and Wildcats, Davidson holds an 8-4 record. That mark was padded by the Wildcats starting the series with the Phoenix on an 8-0 streak, as the Phoenix have won each of the last four matches, including twice in 2011. Last season, Elon swept Davidson at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

ELON vs. WAKE FOREST: Since joining Division I tennis in 2000, Elon has one victory against an ACC opponent in 21 chances. Last season when the Phoenix and Demon Deacons battled at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro, N.C., the Phoenix broke through with a 4-3 victory against Wake Forest. The two sides have split the all-time series with Wake Forest taking a 7-0 sweep during the 2010 season.

LOOKING BACK: The Phoenix picked up their seventh victory in a row on Tuesday, March 11, with a 6-1 win at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center against Gardner-Webb. With the Phoenix up 3-0, Barbora Lazarovaclinched the match for the Phoenix with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Jenny Lunde on court No. 2. Bryn Khoury andMaria Camara Ruiz each breezed to singles wins on court Nos. 3 and 6, respectively, to help the Phoenix quickly earn the win.

STREAKING PHOENIX: After dropping its first four matches of the season, Elon has won seven straight and is looking to continue its streak against the Wildcats and Demon Deacons. Last season, the Phoenix had two double-digit winning streaks. The Phoenix won 11 in a row to start the season 11-1. After dropping two consecutive matches, the Phoenix won 10 in a row before falling to College of Charleston in the Southern Conference tournament finals.

ON A ROLL: Through this seven-match winning streak, Elon has picked up four 7-0 sweeps and another 4-0 sweep. During the streak, Lazarova and Jordan Johnston hold perfect 6-0 records through the streak. Overall, Lazarova is 8-1 this season between Nos. 2, 3 and 4 singles. Frida Jansaker has not dropped a singles match since the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament Jan. 24 against Georgia, as she holds a 6-0 record since while battling through bumps and bruises that held her out for two matches during the winning streak. Khoury holds a 6-1 record during the streak while Taylor Casey owns a 5-1 mark.

JANSAKER HONORED: Jansaker became the fourth Elon athlete throughout the 2013-2014 academic year to be named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week on Feb. 19. The honor came after Jansaker won her doubles match against UNC Wilmington Feb. 17 before helping Elon come from behind against the Seahawks to win the match with a victory at No. 2 singles. Nathan Dean of the men’s soccer team, Sam Coffer of the women’s basketball team and Brian Kowalski of the men’s tennis team are the other three Elon athletes to earn the award this year.

LOOKING AHEAD: With the last nonconference match being played against Wake Forest, Elon will look to finish its final season in the Southern Conference strong starting with Furman on Friday, March 21, at 2:30 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Elon closed its road slate last year in Greenville, S.C. against the Paladins with a 5-2 victory.
