Campbell Takes Win Over Elon Women’s Lacrosse Phoenix

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Elon women’s lacrosse team (3-5) was not able to overcome a once six-goal disadvantage at Campbell (3-2) today, March 15, falling in an 11-8 final at Barker-Lane Stadium.

Elon finished with the advantage in ground balls, 19-12, and caused turnovers, 8-6, while claiming a perfect 11-of-11 mark in clear attempts. Four Phoenix players tallied points on the day as Sloane Kessler scored four goals and finished with one assist to lead the maroon and gold. Anna Vitton tallied two scores, while Molly Garrigan and Olivia Fernandez each posted a goal in the game.

Goalie Rachel Ramirez recorded nine saves between the pipes for Elon off 32 shots by the Fighting Camels.

The game started off with a strong defensive stand by both teams with a combined 11 shots and no score in the first 17 minutes of play. The Fighting Camels scored with 16:56 on the clock before Kessler netted back-to-back goals in less than a minute to give the Phoenix a 2-1 lead with 11:50 remaining in the half.

On the next possession, Campbell’s Loren Day took the draw down the field to immediately score and start a run of seven straight for the Camels to take an 8-2 advantage with less than seven minutes to play in the half. Kessler broke the streak for Campbell by scoring her third goal of the day with 1:12 left on the clock to make it an 8-3 game at the half.

Elon started the second frame off strong by rattling off three goals in less than five minutes. Kessler netted her fourth goal at the 29:16 mark before Fernandez closed the gap to three, 8-5, with a goal less than a minute later. Vitton scored on a free-position shot with 22:58 on the clock to make it a two-goal differential, 8-6, for the Phoenix.

After a Campbell goal, Garrigan scored at the 15:32 mark to make it a 9-7 game before the Fighting Camels put in back-to-back scores to extend its edge to four, 11-7. With 11:05 remaining, Vitton netted a pass fro Kessler for her second score of the day and the final goal of the game.

For the game, Campbell outshot the Phoenix, 32-25, and claimed the advantage at the draw, 11-10. The Camels were 18-of-20 in clear attempts, while each team only scored once off eight total free-position shots. Campbell’s Taeler Errington scored four goals to lead the scoring attack for the Camels, while goalie Brttany Kincer tallied 13 saves.

Elon will return home to Rhodes Stadium on Wednesday, March 19, to host Longwood. Opening draw is set for 7:30 p.m.
