Elon Track and Field Opens 2014 Outdoor Campaign at UNC Wilmington Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team opened its 2014 outdoor campaign on Friday, March 14, at the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Invitational at the Greene Track and Field Complex.

“The events went well after the first day,” said Elon head coach Mark Elliston. “It was a cool, windy day and we’re making adjustments, but it’s good to be in outdoors outdoor competition as we look for a big day tomorrow.”

Elon freshman Shelby Cuddeback set a new personal outdoor record in the 5,000-meter race as she clocked in a time of 18:04.61, finishing second overall. Emily Dunne and Sabina Bains also garnered top-10 finishes in the race with times of 18:33.99 and 18:45.85, respectively.

In the women’s long jump, freshman Carrie Abraham had a leap of 18’0.50” (5.50m) to finish fourth overall in the event.

Senior Kimberlyn Holt had a toss of 151’5” (46.16m) in the women’s hammer throw, finish fifth overall. Fellow senior Kayleigh Birks joined Holt in the top-ten of the event with a mark of 143’9” (43.82m).

Jennifer Jarvis was Elon’s top finisher in the javelin throw after a throw of 121’3” (36.95m) and a fifth place overall standing.

Elon was currently sitting in third in the women’s team standings with 25 points, standing behind host UNCW (48) and North Dakota (39).

A few members of the men’s cross country team also ran on Friday in the men’s 5,000-meters. Ari Rothschild was second overall in the event with a 15:08.46, a new personal outdoor best.

The meet will resume tomorrow in its final day beginning at 10 a.m. with the high jump events.
