HPU Baseball Loses First Game Of Double Header To Coastal Carolina, 1-0

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team fell to Coastal Carolina by a score of 1-1 in the first game of a double header on Saturday afternoon at Williard Stadium. The loss evened the weekend series at a game apiece.

Senior Mike Krumm took the hard-luck loss to fall to 3-2 on the season. Krumm allowed just one earned run in seven innings, allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out four.

Tyler Herb picked up the win for Coastal Carolina, improving to 2-3 on the season. Herb pitched 7-2/3 scoreless innings, allowing eight hits and three walks while striking out six. Tyler Poole pitched the final 1-1/3 innings to earn his fifth save of the season.

With the loss, High Point drops to 11-7 overall and 1-1 in the Big South. Coastal Carolina moves back to .500 at 9-9 for the season and improves to 1-1 in conference play.

Coastal Carolina scored the only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning with a run on a groundout by Michael Paez. CCU catcher John McNulty led of the inning with a double to left and was bunted over before scoring on the Paez ground out.

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth, High Point loaded the bases with no outs on a single by freshman Josh Greene, a throwing error by the CCU catcher on a sacrifice bunt attempt by junior Josh Spano and an intentional walk to sophomore Tim Mansfield. The Panthers were unable to drive in a run as junior Spencer Angelis lined out to right, junior Cody Mansfield grounded into a fielder’s choice at home and freshman Chris Clare flied out to right.

Spano and Angelis each had two hits in the game as Spano went 2-4 with a double and Angelis finished 2-5.

High Point put runners on in every inning but was unable to score as the Panthers stranded 12 in the game.

High Point and Coastal Carolina are currently playing the rubber game of the thre-game series at Williard Stadium as part of a Saturday doubleheader.
