Elon Men’s Tennis Stymies Radford in Greensboro

ELON, N.C. – Having to play through a last-minute venue change, the Elon University men’s tennis team stayed the course and topped Radford University by a score of 4-2 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center today, March 16, to earn its sixth straight win.

“It was really great to see some of the guys that have been struggling of late come through for us today,” said Elon head coach Michael Leonard. “It was good to see our team pick up in places we needed to where others just had off days but we’re ready to keep rolling and we’re looking forward to our match with The Citadel next weekend.”

Instead of playing doubles matches first, the two sides elected to use the doubles point as a tiebreaker should it be needed. But with four singles victories, Elon took the match from the Highlanders without the extra point.

The Phoenix fell behind the Highlanders 1-0 when Jordan Kaufman dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision on court No. 5 to Joe Mills, but Elon rebounded on court Nos. 2, 3 and 4, who all won within a few minutes of each other.

Brian Kowalski brought the Phoenix back even with a 6-2, 6-0 win on court No. 4 over Javier Waase. He was followed by Robert Lindgren earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory on court No. 3 over Aymeric Autones.

Stefan Fortmann, who moved back to the No. 2 singles position for the first time since Jan. 25, earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Patrick O’Keefe to make it 3-1 in favor of Elon.

After Cameron Silverman, ranked No. 38 in the country, fell to Nicholas Sayer by a score of 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) on court No. 1, #Juan Madrid staved off doubles play with a match-clinching 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory on court No. 6.

Elon returns to action one week from today on Sunday, March 23, on the road against The Citadel. The match in Charleston, S.C. is set for 1 p.m. against the Bulldogs.
