HPU Women’s Golf Finishes Third At The Pinehurst Challenge

PINEHURST, N.C. – The High Point University women’s golf team shot a combined 301 in the second round of the Pinehurst Challenge on Sunday and finished the tournament in third place out of 16 teams with a two-day total of 611. Junior Grier Bennett carded an even-par 72 to lead the Panthers on the day.

The third and final round of the event was cancelled due to rain making it a 36-hole event.

“I am really proud of the way Grier played today,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “Sarah played very steady and Danielle is starting to really get back into her groove. I am happy with where we finished after two rounds but I really would have liked to see what we would have done in the third round.”

Bennett finished the event in a tie for third with a two-round total of 147 (75-72). Freshman Sarah Bae turned in a score of 74 in the second round and finished the tournament in fifth with a score of 149. Freshman Danielle Fuss finished in a tie for 21st with a score of 155 (79-76) and sophomore Casey Ward tied for 45th with a 36-hole score of 160 (81-79). Sophomore Tan Cheeranont finished tied for 55th with a total score of 162 (83-79). Senior Margaret Suchan competed as an individual and finished in a tie for 58th with a score of 163 (83-80).

The College of Charleston won the team title with a two-round score of 583. Jacksonville State finished in second with a combined score of 605. Jacksonville finished fourth with a score of 616 while Middle Tennessee finished in fifth with a two-day score of 620.

Laura Fuenfsteuck of the College of Charleston and Maya Parsons of Jacksonville State tied for the Individual medal with matching scores of 141. The pair finished ix-shots clear of Bennett and the College of Charleston’s Morgan Webber.

High Point returns to action next week when they head to Arkansas to play in the UALR Golf Classic. The two-day event will be played at the Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs Village, Ark., beginning on Monday, March 24.
