HPU Women’s Basketball To Face Bowling Green In WNIT

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women’s basketball team will play Bowling Green on Thursday in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) in Bowling Green, Ohio. The game time will be announced shortly. It is HPU’s third appearance in the WNIT.

All WNIT games are hosted by participating schools and the championship game will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network on April 5.

Thursday’s winner will face either St. Bonaventure or Charlotte. If HPU advances, the second round will also be played on the road.

High Point went 22-10 on the season with a 16-4 mark in Big South play to earn the league’s regular season championship and automatic berth to the WNIT. HPU advanced to the Big South Tournament Championship game before losing to Winthrop.

This is High Point’s third trip to the WNIT. The Panthers lost at Charlotte in 2007 and at NC State in 2012.

Head coach DeUnna Hendrix was named the Big South Coach of the Year after leading HPU to its most wins since joining Div. I in 1999-2000. Hendrix, the youngest head coach in NCAA Div. I, has a 39-23 record in two seasons at High Point.

High Point features the Big South Freshman of the Year, Kaylah Keys, who leads the league in scoring with 17.8 points per game. Keys was also named to the All-Big South first team, All-Freshman team and All-Tournament team. Redshirt-junior Stacia Robertson was also named to the All-Big South first team and All-Tournament team.

Big South teams are 3-8 all-time in the WNIT with Winthrop beating Florida Gulf Coast in the first round last year and Radford winning two games in 1989.
