College Softball Finals – Guilford 8–8, Mary Baldwin 4—0

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Maggie Shaffer threw her second consecutive shutout and Guilford College turned their first triple play in program history as the Quakers took a non-conference doubleheader over Mary Baldwin College Wednesday afternoon. The Quakers claimed game one, 8-4, and also won the nightcap, 8-0, in five innings.

Rachel Howard went 2-for-3 in game one with three RBI thanks to a two-RBI double in the first inning and a solo home run in the following frame. Calli Pastor finished game one 1-for-2 with a fielder’s choice RBI in the first inning. Taylor Boyd’s RBI-double down the left field line started the Quaker rally in the bottom of the second inning. After a 7-0 start, the Squirrels mounted three unanswered runs before Emily VanHaneghan reached base on a single and a throwing error for an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Rebekah Langston (5-0) took the game-one win throwing the first four innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out four batters. Pastor relieved Langston in the fifth inning throwing two innings of relief work, giving up one run on five hits while striking out one batter. Maggie Shaffer earned her first save of the season, relieving Pastor in the seventh. Shaffer earned her first collegiate save when Cynthia Hayes (Seagrove, N.C./Southwestern Randolph) caught a line drive off the bat of Sarah Seekin, tagged second base, and threw to first base to complete the first triple play in program history.

Marty Wilcox led the Quakers in game two, going 2-for-2 with three RBI. Wilcox drove in the game’s first run by drawing a walk in the first inning. Pastor added her second RBI of the day in the first inning with single on the left side in the next at-bat.

Wilcox increased her team-leading RBI total to 24 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run home run to center field, her fourth home run of the season. Laura Hall went 3-for-4 with a RBI single in the bottom of the third inning. Hall also brought two runs home on a four-base throwing error in the second inning. Taylor Boyd concluded the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single up the middle to claim the win, 8-0.

Cynthia Hayes continued her school-record 26-game hitting streak, going 4-for-7 on the afternoon with her Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) leading 10th double in game one.

Shaffer (8-1) picked up the win with a complete-game two-hit shutout, striking out four batters.

The Quakers (17-2, 2-1 ODAC) take the road for three games tomorrow afternoon. The Quakers will start the day with a 12:30 p.m. game at Roanoke College, concluding a two-game series that was suspended last Wednesday in Greensboro due to rain. Guilford will then travel to Southern Virginia University to face the Knights in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
