College Softball Finals – Guilford 15—6, Southern Virginia 0—0

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Guilford College swept a shortened doubleheader with Southern Virginia University early Thursday evening. The Quakers took game one, 14-0, in four innings while claiming the nightcap, 6-0, in three innings.

Casey Snead (5-1) and Maggie Shaffer both threw two innings a piece in game one, combining for a one-hitter. Snead struck out two batters while Shaffer fanned four. Guilford pitching only allowed two base runners.

Cynthia Hayes (Seagrove, N.C./Southwestern Randolph) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two stolen bases on the afternoon while increasing her program-best hitting streak to 29 games, dating back to last season. Hayes has hit safely in all contests this season.

Rachel Howard connected on three-run home run and Marty Wilcox went 1-for-2 in game one with a grand slam home run to power Guilford’s 14-run second inning. Howard would complete the game with four RBI thanks to a RBI-single in the first inning. Wilcox increased her team-leading totals in home runs (5) and RBI (28).

Guilford’s boosted their offense in game two thanks to three Knight errors, a wild pitch, and a passed ball. Emily VanHaneghan added her second RBI of the afternoon with a single in the top of the third inning.

Rebekah Langston (6-0) picked up the win with a complete-game one-hitter, striking out six batters in three innings and allowing just one base runner.

The Quakers (19-3, 2-2 ODAC) return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday, hosting Eastern Mennonite University in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
