HPU Women’s Lacrosse Takes 10-7 Loss At Home To Denver

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women’s lacrosse team fell at home to Denver on Thursday by a score of 10-7. Junior
Julia Burns made ten saves for a second consecutive game but the Pioneers scored the final four goals of the game to push past HPU.

“Anytime we play a team of this caliber we learn a lot both good and bad,” said HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell. “We worked hard to prepare for their clear and I thought we did a good job causing turnovers but we just didn’t execute. Julia Burns did a great job and everything we asked of her in the cage. She kept us in the game at times and made some huge saves so I’m proud of her effort.”

High Point held a 7-6 advantage in the game following three goals within the first five minutes after halftime. The Panthers were then held scoreless after the 25:59 mark as Denver countered with four unanswered goals to pull out the 10-7 victory.

Mackenzie Carroll and Sara Kuhlman both tallied a pair of goals in the Panthers’ loss. Carroll also notched an assist for High Point.

High Point got on the board first when Alec Perry found Kuhlman with a pass just four minutes into the game that led to the first goal and put HPU ahead 1-0. Denver responded quickly, however, scoring just 42 seconds later on Meredith Harris’ first of the day and 24th of the season.

The Pioneers tacked on five more goals in the half while Alec Perry, Carroll and Jasmine Jordan all scored for the Panthers to send HPU into the break down 6-4.

Carroll notched her second score of the day just 41 seconds into the second half to spark a 3-0 unanswered run by HPU. Emily Meier followed that up with a goal less than a minute later and Kuhlman scored her second of the day less than three minutes after Meier to put HPU ahead 7-6.

Denver answered with 19:19 to go in the game when Meredith Harris scored her second goal to tie the score at 7-7. The goal sparked the Pioneers attack, which then added three more goals in the final 17:54 to ultimately win 10-7.

Denver’s Rachel McKinnon scored four goals for a second-straight game to push her season total to 20. Attacker Jill Remenapp, who came into the game leading the nation with 3.60 assists per game, tallied one goal and three assists to move her point total to 34 on the season.

Burns matched her career-high with 10 saves for a second-consecutive game. Burns now has 53 saves on the season and a league-leading 9.83 goals-against average. Denver’s Hannah Hook made 11 saves in the cage to pick up the win.

High Point’s defense caused 13 turnovers in the game while Denver forced just eight. The Panthers also went 12-for-12 on clear attempts. HPU was outshot in the game 25-20 and Denver won 13 draw controls to HPU’s six.

HPU returns to action in 10 days as the team hosts Elon on Sunday, March 30 at 2 p.m. The Phoenix are 4-5 in their inaugural season. The team has played four Big South opponents on the year resulting in a 2-2 record with wins over Coastal Carolina and Longwood. Elon will play Davidson and Presbyterian College before heading to High Point.
