Northwest Guilford was at Ragsdale on Friday night for the Piedmont Triad Conference opener for both teams.
Colson Everett was on the mound for Northwest and he got through the first three innings only allowing two hits and no runs. Ragsdale got on the board in the fourth. Ben Fischer hit a high pop up to short left field and when the second baseman dropped the ball, Fischer who had hustled out of the box, slid into second base. Matt Horkey followed with a double down the left field line to score Fischer and one batter later, Cesar Trejo lined a single into right center to score Horkey with the second run. That would be the end of the Ragsdale scoring as Everett got out of the inning and went on to pitch 5 1/3 allowing 6 hits, 2 runs only one of which was earned and striking out 5. Jesse Juday relieved with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth and pitched out of the jam.
Horkey was on the mound for the Tigers and the two runs scored in the second would prove to be enough. Horkey pitched a complete game, only allowing four hits and one walk while striking out six batters. Northwest touched him up for their one run in the fifth. Cole Aker led off with a double to left field and he moved to third on a foul fly ball that was caught by Corey Brandenburg in right field. Aker scored as Trey Walker hit a grounder to the right side. Horkey then pitched a perfect sixth and seventh inning to pick up his third win of the season.
It was a well played game between two very good baseball teams. The pitching was excellent and both teams made good plays in the field. The first Conference game was just a taste of what is to come as the Piedmont Triad will be a battle from top to bottom with six very good teams. Now if we can just get the weather to cooperate.
Ragsdale is scheduled to play at Southwest Guilford on Tuesday, 3/25 while Northwest Guilford will host High Point Central on Monday, 3/24.
Almost perfect game on a perfect night for baseball. Two very good teams going at it. NWG hit it hard but sometimes right at the Tigers. Trejo made some good plays at SS. Horkey looked very tough on the mound and came up with the big hit to drive in the first run.
Looking forward to all the battles in this conference this year.
These are 2 very good teams and a well played game. I wish Judahy could have a thrown a few more innings… Not sure the name of the Ragsdale player maybe # 3? He really can swing the bat and crushed that ball to left center field… Looke forward to rematch!

Very tough conference but it appears Ragsdale is a much better hitting team then NW..
