College Baseball Finals – Bridgewater 7-8, Guilford 4-1

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader from visiting Guilford College Saturday winning, 7-4 and 8-1.

The Eagles (13-7, 6-3 ODAC) scored five seventh-inning runs in the opener to erase a 4-2 deficit. Justin Petock’s one-out single plated the go-ahead run. Nick Fulk had an RBI triple and Zach Hynes added a run-scoring double in the inning. Bridgewater’s Fulk, Derrik Walling and Tyler Hoffman each had two hits and Bryan Sanderson had two RBI, including one in the decisive seventh inning. Kyle Henshaw (2-1) earned the victory with three innings of two-hit relief.

Reliever Justin Jordan (1-1) took the loss in relief of Guilford starter Borja Jones-Berasaluce, who cruised through the first six innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits. He ended up yielding four runs (3 earned) with six strikeouts and no walks. Four Quakers had two hits in the opener, including Tyler Petersen, who had a run-scoring single in Guilford’s two-run third inning. John Macon Smith tripled and had two RBI for the Quakers (10-12, 4-4 ODAC).

Left-hander Corey Armentrout (4-2) fanned six and scattered seven hits in seven innings of Bridgewater’s 8-1 nightcap victory. He yielded one unearned run to collect his fourth victory of the year. Brendan Howell led the Eagles’ offense with two hits, including a double, and three RBI. Walling, Hynes and Darren Yoder also had two hits for Bridgewater.

The Eagles scored single runs in each of the first four frames before Howell’s two-run double keyed a three-run fifth, chasing Guilford starter Drew Crawford (2-3).

Gabe Mirabelli had two of the Quakers’ seven hits and stole a base. Smith scored the Quakers’ lone run on a two-out fielding error by Hynes in the fourth inning.

Guilford hosts league-rival Roanoke College Sunday (3/23) at 3:00 p.m.
