College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Washington and Lee 19, Guilford 8

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Cam Lewis scored five goals and two assists in visiting Washington and Lee University’s 19-8 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse victory at Guilford College Saturday.

Generals’ senior Jared Mitchell dominated the face-off circle, winning 18-of-21 draws and collecting a game-high 15 ground balls. He also scored a second-quarter goal that opened a 9-3 Generals’ lead

Lewis and Cameron Dabir both scored twice in a sometimes frenetic first quarter that saw Generals (5-4, 2-0 ODAC) open 8-3 lead. After Dabir scored 52 seconds into the game, Washington and Lee tallied three times in less than a minute, which gave the visitors a 4-0 lead with 2:28 elapsed. The Quakers answered with goals by Daniel Hughey and Adam Fiore 33 seconds apart before Washington and Lee closed the quarter on a 4-1 run.

The game’s middle two quarters were far less frenetic as both teams traded second-quarter goals and played a scoreless third period. Credit both goaltenders, Washington and Lee’s Warren Berenis and Guilford’s Thomas Deane, for altering the scoring pace with 12 total saves between them in the second and third quarters.

Washington and Lee took advantage of four Quakers’ penalties in the final quarter and outscored Guilford, 9-3. The Generals scored three extra-man goals in the period, one by Lewis, who had three goals and an assist in the frame.

The Generals had 10 different students dent the twine, including Joe Wood, who netted three goals and had two assists. Dabir also had five points with two scores and three assists. Garrett Paglia and Kevin Katzmann both scored twice. Berenis made eight saves in 50 minutes of work.

Fiore and Chase Clausen both scored twice for Guilford (5-2, 0-2 ODAC). Duncan Fitzgerald added a goal and an assists. Deane finished with 11 saves and five ground balls.

The Quakers visit league-rival Roanoke College Wednesday (3/26) at 7:00 p.m.
