ELON, N.C. – Looking to rebound from a tough loss yesterday, the Elon University women’s tennis team swept the Wofford Terriers today, March 22, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center to snap a brief two-match losing streak.
“We bounced back well from yesterday’s match,” said Elon head coach Elizabeth Anderson. “We came out with a lot of energy and played a solid match throughout. We have the fortune of a few days off before getting back to practicing before our next match against Appalachian State.”
After sweeping the doubles point in convincing fashion, Elon’s roll continued in singles with Frida Jansakerclinching the match for the Phoenix on court No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Audrey Coventry. She was followed less than one minute later by Barbora Lazarova, who earned a 6-1 6-4 win on court No. 3 against Julia Paulson.
Elon was paced in singles by Taylor Casey on court No. 6. The sophomore made quick work of Taylor Carlson, taking a 6-1, 6-0 victory. She was followed shortly after by Maria Camara Ruiz, who defeated Mareli Sanchez on court No. 5 to put Elon up 3-0.
Jordan Johnston and Bryn Khoury finished off the sweep for Elon with wins on court Nos. 1 and 4, respectively. Khoury got a battle from Catherine Martin, but ultimately claimed a 6-4, 6-3 victory. Johnston finished the day having to come from behind after dropping the first set. The senior recovered to sweep the second set, then took the third set in convincing fashion, 6-1.
Each of Elon’s doubles pairings had little trouble winning to start the day. Jansaker and Camara Ruiz were first off the court on No. 2 with an 8-1 win over Martin and Sanchez. Johnston and Lazarova followed with the same 8-1 score on court No. 1. Khoury and Casey finished the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win on court No. 3 over Carlson and Kalli Karas.
Elon gets an extended break before returning to the courts, as its next match will not come until Tuesday, April 1. The Phoenix will travel to Appalachian State for a 3 p.m. match in Boone, N.C. The match is the first of four straight matches on the road for the Phoenix. Next time Elon plays at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center will be for the regular season finale and Senior Day on April 12 against Western Carolina.
