Greensboro College Pride Softball Drops Pair To Huntingdon

GREENSBORO, NC—The Greensboro College softball team hosted the Hawks of Huntingdon College on Saturday afternoon with a two game set. The Pride dropped an exciting game one 12-11 before falling in the day cap 3-1.

Huntingdon struck first in the top half of the first inning, before Greensboro came back to tie the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning. Chelsea Brewer opened the bottom half of the inning with a triple to the right field gap before crossing the plate on a miscue by the Hawks making the score 2-1 in favor of the visitors. One batter later Jackie Nicholson scored on a Sarah Connolly sacrifice fly tying the game at 2-2.

Greensboro was able to take the lead in the bottom half of the next inning as Kierstin Mckenna singled home Sarah Tompkins putting the Pride on top 3-2, however the Hawks pushed back into the lead at 4-3 in the top half of the third inning. Greensboro did not go away as they plated four runs in the home half of the third when Rae Hall sent the ball over the right field fence for a grand slam giving the Pride a 7-4 lead.

The Pride then added two more runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning extending the lead to 9-4 before Huntingdon scored eight unanswered runs taking the lead 12-9. Greensboro College gave it a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning as Rae Hall connected on her second home run of the day pulling Greensboro to within two runs at 12-10. Later in the inning the Pride pushed one final run across but came up short falling 12-11.

Rae Hall led the way in the first game with five RBI’s on two hits. The Pride collected 14 total hits in the game as Rae Hall, Kierstin McKenna, and Sarah Tompkins each had multiple hits in the game.

In the second game of the day, the Hawks tallied three runs in the top half of the fourth inning pulling out to a 3-0 lead. The score remained the same until the Pride found the board for one run in their final at bat falling 3-1. Once again the Greensboro run came by way of the long ball as Sarah Connolly connected pulling Greensboro within two runs but could not get any closer.

With the pair of losses, the Pride’s overall record drops to 11-11 and 4-4 in USA South Conference play. The Pride softball team will return to action when the Panthers of LaGrange come to town. The first pitch of game one has been moved to 9:00 A.M. due to weather concerns in the area.
