Wells Fargo, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the final standings in the Wells Fargo Conference Cup competitions for the 2013-14 winter sports season.
The Wells Fargo Cup award, sponsored by Wells Fargo and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications.
The Wells Fargo Conference Cup is a companion to the Wells Fargo Cup and recognizes schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within individual conferences. Wachovia and now Wells Fargo has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.
Class 1-A Conference Results:
Carolina 1-A: The top three teams hold their previous positions, with Princeton atop the conference. Princeton finished second in men’s and women’s basketball this winter. Second-place Rosewood captured a championship in women’s basketball and finished second in women’s indoor track and field. Spring Creek is third with a runner-up finish in men’s indoor track and field. Coastal 10 1-A: Camden finished second in men’s basketball and still remains in first after the winter, but Perquimans has surged into second and is just behind the top school, thanks to third-place finishes in men’s and women’s basketball. Manteo drops one spot to third and is only a half point ahead of fourth-place Gates County. Coastal Plains 1-A: East Carteret is able to surge past Lejeune with a league title in men’s basketball to take first in the conference after the winter. Lejeune falls to second, while Pamlico moves up into third thanks to a top finish in women’s basketball and a second-place performance in men’s basketball. North Central 1-A: Raleigh Charter increases its first-place lead with a solid winter season, including a third-place finish in women’s basketball. A league title in men’s basketball and a second-place finish in wrestling earn Voyager Academy second in the conference after the winter. Franklin Academy is only a half point behind in third, finishing first in women’s basketball. Mount Airy is still in striking distance in second, thanks to a conference title in wrestling and a second-place finish in men’s swimming. East Surry moves into third, finishing second in wrestling and men’s basketball this winter. Smoky Mountain 1-A: In a tight race, Swain is still the conference leader after the winter, finishing third in wrestling. Hayesville passes Murphy, which is now only one point behind in third, to take possession of second thanks to a tie for first in basketball and a second-place finish in women’s basketball. Lincoln Charter moves up from sixth to finish the winter in third, thanks to conference championships in women’s basketball and women’s swimming. Two Rivers 1-A: Riverside-Martin remains in first, winning a championship in women’s basketball this winter. Yadkin Valley 1-A: With a remarkable charge from its previous sixth-place position, North Stanly now leads the conference, finishing second in men’s basketball and third in men’s swimming this winter. Union Academy is now second, thanks to a top finish in women’s swimming and a second-place finish in men’s swimming. West Montgomery and previous conference leader Gray Stone Day are tied for third. West Montgomery finished second in women’s basketball while Gray Stone Day finished first in men’s swimming. Four County 1-A/2-A: With a championship in men’s basketball and a share of the women’s conference basketball title, Clinton captures the top spot. Previous frontrunner Wallace-Rose Hill finds itself in second, with East Bladen not too far behind in third. East Bladen tied with Clinton for first in women’s basketball. Mountain Valley 1-A/2-A: Elkin takes the top spot with a sweep of the conference swimming championships. Wilkes Central is a close second, finishing third in wrestling and men’s swimming this winter. There is a deadlock for third between former top school Ashe County and up and coming North Wilkes. Ashe County tied for third in wrestling with Wilkes Central. North Wilkes was previously in last place, but finished first in women’s basketball, and second in wrestling, men’s swimming, and women’s swimming to vault into a share of third. Central Carolina 2-A: Salisbury increases its first-place lead with a solid winter season,consisting of a conference crown in women’s swimming and second-place finishes in men’s swimming and wrestling. West Davidson is second, finishing third in men’s and women’s swimming, while rival East Davidson sits in third with a championship in women’s basketball. East Central 2-A: The top spot now belongs to Croatan, which is able to pass previous conference leader East Duplin thanks to a league title in wrestling. East Duplin falls to second, despite a runner-up performance in women’s basketball. North Brunswick holds on to third, with third-place finishes in men’s and women’s basketball, but is only a half point ahead of fourth-place Dixon. Eastern Carolina 2-A: With only a couple of points separating the top three teams, North Lenoir is narrowly in the lead, finishing second in wrestling this winter. Kinston surges from its previous fifth-place position and now sits in second thanks to a sweep of the conference basketball championships. Ayden-Grifton is third with a top finish in wrestling. Eastern Plains 2-A: Washington is able to fight off Beddingfield to maintain its first-place form, finishing third in women’s basketball and wrestling this winter. Second-place Beddingfield finished first in women’s basketball, second in men’s basketball, and tied for third in wrestling with Washington. Farmville Central is now third, thanks to conference championships in men’s basketball and wrestling along with a tie for third in women’s basketball with conference leader Washington. Mid-State 2-A: With a sweep of the conference swimming championships and third-place finishes in men’s and women’s basketball, Carrboro increases its lead over the competition. Reidsville moves into a tie for second with Jordan-Matthews, sweeping the league titles in basketball and finishing second in men’s and women’s swimming. Randleman remains second, finishing first in men’s swimming. Trinity finished first in men’s basketball and second in wrestling and men’s swimming to take possession of third. East Chapel Hill swept the conference swimming championships. Riverside remains in third, finishing first in wrestling and third in women’s basketball. Piedmont Triad 4-A: Another dominant sports season for Northwest Guilford has the school one step closer to the Conference Cup. The top school finished first in wrestling and women’s swimming as well as second in women’s basketball this winter. Ragsdale is still in second, with a first-place finish in men’s swimming and a second-place finish in wrestling. Third place now belongs to Southwest Guilford, which swept the conference basketball championships and finished second in men’s swimming. SoMeck 8 4-A: Ardrey Kell dominates the winter sports season to capture the conference’s top spot. The school finished first in women’s basketball and second in men’s basketball, wrestling, men’s swimming, and women’s swimming. Charlotte Catholic is still second, with league titles in wrestling and women’s swimming and a second-place finish in women’s basketball. Previous conference leader Providence falls to third, finishing third in men’s and women’s swimming this winter. Scotland is still second after a league title in women’s basketball, while Lumberton has closed the gap in third, finishing second in women’s basketball. Southwestern 4-A: Another commanding sports season keeps Myers Park atop the conference after the winter. The top school swept the conference swimming championships and also added a top finish in women’s basketball to its winter campaign. Butler remains in second with runner-up finishes in men’s and women’s basketball. Third place still belongs to Porter Ridge, which finished second in wrestling. Panther Creek is still third, with runner-up performances in men’s basketball and gymnastics.
