Winter Wells Fargo Conference Cup Standings Announced (High School Sports)

Wells Fargo, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the final standings in the Wells Fargo Conference Cup competitions for the 2013-14 winter sports season.

The Wells Fargo Cup award, sponsored by Wells Fargo and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications.

The Wells Fargo Conference Cup is a companion to the Wells Fargo Cup and recognizes schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within individual conferences. Wachovia and now Wells Fargo has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.

Class 1-A Conference Results:

Carolina 1-A: The top three teams hold their previous positions, with Princeton atop the conference. Princeton finished second in men’s and women’s basketball this winter. Second-place Rosewood captured a championship in women’s basketball and finished second in women’s indoor track and field. Spring Creek is third with a runner-up finish in men’s indoor track and field. Conference Standings: Princeton 56.5, Rosewood 53.5, Spring Creek 43.5, Lakewood 40, James Kenan 32.5, Hobbton 31, North Duplin 23, Neuse Charter 16.

Coastal 10 1-A: Camden finished second in men’s basketball and still remains in first after the winter, but Perquimans has surged into second and is just behind the top school, thanks to third-place finishes in men’s and women’s basketball. Manteo drops one spot to third and is only a half point ahead of fourth-place Gates County. Coastal Plains 1-A: East Carteret is able to surge past Lejeune with a league title in men’s basketball to take first in the conference after the winter. Lejeune falls to second, while Pamlico moves up into third thanks to a top finish in women’s basketball and a second-place performance in men’s basketball. Conference Standings: East Carteret 325, Lejeune 310, Pamlico 280, Northside 275, Bear Grass 175, Southside 170, Jones 160.

North Central 1-A: Raleigh Charter increases its first-place lead with a solid winter season, including a third-place finish in women’s basketball. A league title in men’s basketball and a second-place finish in wrestling earn Voyager Academy second in the conference after the winter. Franklin Academy is only a half point behind in third, finishing first in women’s basketball. Conference Standings: Raleigh Charter 47.5, Voyager Academy 43.5, Franklin Academy 43, Roxboro Community 25.5, Kestrel Heights 23, Woods Charter 22.5, River Mill 20.5, East Wake Academy 11.5.

Northwest 1-A: Finishing first in women’s basketball, men’s swimming, and women’s swimming, Bishop McGuinness pulls away from the pack and remains first. Mount Airy is still in striking distance in second, thanks to a conference title in wrestling and a second-place finish in men’s swimming. East Surry moves into third, finishing second in wrestling and men’s basketball this winter. Conference Standings: Bishop McGuinness 67.5, Mount Airy 59, East Surry 46.5, Atkins 36, Walkertown 33, North Stokes 32, Winston-Salem Prep 19.

Smoky Mountain 1-A: In a tight race, Swain is still the conference leader after the winter, finishing third in wrestling. Hayesville passes Murphy, which is now only one point behind in third, to take possession of second thanks to a tie for first in basketball and a second-place finish in women’s basketball. Southern Piedmont 1-A: Third-place finishes in women’s basketball and men’s swimming keep the Community School of Davidson as the frontrunner in the conference. Second place still belongs to Thomas Jefferson, finishing second in men’s basketball and third in women’s swimming. Lincoln Charter moves up from sixth to finish the winter in third, thanks to conference championships in women’s basketball and women’s swimming. Tar Roanoke 1-A: League titles in men’s and women’s basketball keep Granville Central on top after the winter. Louisburg is still second, tying with Granville Central for a share of the conference men’s basketball title and finishing first in wrestling. Third place belongs to KIPP Pride. Two Rivers 1-A: Riverside-Martin remains in first, winning a championship in women’s basketball this winter. Tarboro secures second with a second-place finish in basketball, while men’s basketball runner-up South Creek is third. Yadkin Valley 1-A: With a remarkable charge from its previous sixth-place position, North Stanly now leads the conference, finishing second in men’s basketball and third in men’s swimming this winter. Union Academy is now second, thanks to a top finish in women’s swimming and a second-place finish in men’s swimming. West Montgomery and previous conference leader Gray Stone Day are tied for third. West Montgomery finished second in women’s basketball while Gray Stone Day finished first in men’s swimming. Class 1-A/2-A Conference Results:

Four County 1-A/2-A: With a championship in men’s basketball and a share of the women’s conference basketball title, Clinton captures the top spot. Previous frontrunner Wallace-Rose Hill finds itself in second, with East Bladen not too far behind in third. East Bladen tied with Clinton for first in women’s basketball. Conference Standings: Clinton 49.5, Wallace-Rose Hill 41, East Bladen 36.5, West Bladen 34, Midway 33, Pender 26.5, Heide Trask 25, Union 18.5.

Mountain Valley 1-A/2-A: Elkin takes the top spot with a sweep of the conference swimming championships. Wilkes Central is a close second, finishing third in wrestling and men’s swimming this winter. There is a deadlock for third between former top school Ashe County and up and coming North Wilkes. Ashe County tied for third in wrestling with Wilkes Central. North Wilkes was previously in last place, but finished first in women’s basketball, and second in wrestling, men’s swimming, and women’s swimming to vault into a share of third. Three Rivers 1-A/2-A: Finishing third in men’s and women’s basketball, Whiteville sits in first after the winter season. Farimont is in second with a league title in men’s basketball. Previous sixth-place school Red Springs finishes the winter in third, thanks to second-place finishes in men’s and women’s basketball. Conference Standings: Whiteville 59, Fairmont 43, Red Springs 39, East Columbus 34.5, South Columbus 33.5, St. Paul’s 33.5, South Robeson 31, West Columbus 16.5.

Western Highlands 1-A/2-A: Polk County captures the top spot in the conference after the winter, passing previous first-place Hendersonville now in second. Avery County moves into third, thanks to a top finish in men’s basketball and a runner-up performance in wrestling. Class 2-A Conference Results:

Central Carolina 2-A: Salisbury increases its first-place lead with a solid winter season,consisting of a conference crown in women’s swimming and second-place finishes in men’s swimming and wrestling. West Davidson is second, finishing third in men’s and women’s swimming, while rival East Davidson sits in third with a championship in women’s basketball. Conference Standings: Salisbury 104, West Davidson 94, East Davidson 88.5, Lexington 84, North Rowan 75, Thomasville 67.5.

East Central 2-A: The top spot now belongs to Croatan, which is able to pass previous conference leader East Duplin thanks to a league title in wrestling. East Duplin falls to second, despite a runner-up performance in women’s basketball. North Brunswick holds on to third, with third-place finishes in men’s and women’s basketball, but is only a half point ahead of fourth-place Dixon. Conference Standings: Croatan 90.5, East Duplin 89, North Brunswick 78, Dixon 77.5, Northside 73, Southwest Onslow 72.

Eastern Carolina 2-A: With only a couple of points separating the top three teams, North Lenoir is narrowly in the lead, finishing second in wrestling this winter. Kinston surges from its previous fifth-place position and now sits in second thanks to a sweep of the conference basketball championships. Ayden-Grifton is third with a top finish in wrestling. Conference Standings: North Lenoir 31, Kinston 30.5, Ayden-Grifton 29.5, South Lenoir 29, Greene Central 24, Goldsboro 24.

Eastern Plains 2-A: Washington is able to fight off Beddingfield to maintain its first-place form, finishing third in women’s basketball and wrestling this winter. Second-place Beddingfield finished first in women’s basketball, second in men’s basketball, and tied for third in wrestling with Washington. Farmville Central is now third, thanks to conference championships in men’s basketball and wrestling along with a tie for third in women’s basketball with conference leader Washington. Conference Standings: Washington 38.5, Beddingfield 36.5, Farmville Central 32.5, North Pitt 32, North Johnston 23, SouthWest Edgecombe 13.5.

Mid-State 2-A: With a sweep of the conference swimming championships and third-place finishes in men’s and women’s basketball, Carrboro increases its lead over the competition. Reidsville moves into a tie for second with Jordan-Matthews, sweeping the league titles in basketball and finishing second in men’s and women’s swimming. Jordan-Matthews finished third in women’s swimming this winter. Conference Standings: Carrboro 57, Reidsville 39, Jordan-Matthews 39, Graham 37, Cummings 30, Bartlett Yancey 21.

Northern Carolina 2-A: Franklinton and the North Carolina School of Science and Math are now in a tie for the top spot, with Franklinton finishing second in wrestling, and NCSSM finishing first in swimming. Bunn is still third with a runner-up finish in basketball this winter. Northeastern Coastal 2-A: Northeastern is able to hold off First Flight to maintain its top spot in the conference. Northeastern finished second in men’s basketball, men’s swimming, and women’s swimming, while second-place First Flight swept the conference swimming championships and also finished first in wrestling. Third place still belongs to Currituck, which finished second in wrestling this winter. Conference Standings: Northeastern 62, First Flight 61, Currituck 49, Edenton Holmes 36, Pasquotank 29, Hertford County 25, Bertie 19.

PAC 6 2-A: Wheatmore further establishes itself as the top school in the conference with a championship in wrestling, and second-place finishes in men’s swimming, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball. Randleman remains second, finishing first in men’s swimming. Trinity finished first in men’s basketball and second in wrestling and men’s swimming to take possession of third. Conference Standings: Wheatmore 50, Randleman 44.5, Trinity 42, Providence Grove 37.5, Eastern Randolph 25.5, High Point Andrews 24.5.

Rocky River 2-A: A top finish in women’s swimming and a runner-up finish in men’s swimming keep Central Academy on top of the conference. Parkwood remains in second with a conference crown in women’s basketball, but sits just one point ahead of Forest Hills, which finished second in men’s basketball this winter. Conference Standings: Central Academy 44, Parkwood 38.5, Forest Hills 37.5, Mount Pleasant 37, West Stanly 36.5, Monroe 28.5.

Southern District 7 2-A: Newton-Conover has tightened its grip on the top spot, with conference crowns in men’s basketball and wrestling and runner-up finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. East Lincoln continues to sit in second, sweeping the conference swimming championships this winter. Bandys seizes sole possession of third thanks to a league title in women’s basketball. Conference Standings: Newton-Conover 70.5, East Lincoln 59.5, Bandys 53.5, Maiden 51.5, West Caldwell 46.5, Bunker Hill 37.5, Lincolnton 32.5, West Lincoln 32.5.

Western Piedmont 2-A: The conference frontrunner Surry Central maintains its top form with a championship in women’s swimming and runner-up finishes in wrestling and women’s basketball. Only a half point behind is West Stokes, which captured championships in men’s basketball and men’s swimming, as well as finished second in women’s swimming this winter. Third place still belongs to Forbush, a second-place finisher in men’s swimming and third in wrestling and women’s swimming. Class 2-A/3-A Conference Results:

Big South 2-A/3-A: Ashbrook takes over the top spot in the conference thanks to a formidable winter sports season consisting of a top finish in wrestling and runner-up performances in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and men’s swimming. Previous frontrunner Lake Norman Charter falls to second, despite winning championships in women’s basketball, men’s swimming, and women’s swimming. South Point remains third with third-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. Crest is second, with a third-place finish in women’s basketball, while J.C. Draughn holds on to third thanks to a top finish in women’s swimming and a runner-up performance in men’s swimming. Western North Carolina Athletic 2-A/3-A: With a solid winter season, West Henderson is able to hold off the rest of the field and remain in first. Pisgah takes over second thanks to a top finish in wrestling and a tie for first in women’s basketball with Franklin, which finds itself in third after the winter. Class 3-A Conference Results:

Big 8 3-A: Chapel Hill is able to capture the conference lead, thanks to league titles in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming, and a second-place finish in wrestling. Previous top school Cardinal Gibbons is now second, with runner-up performances in women’s basketball, men’s swimming, and women’s swimming. Cedar Ridge remains in third thanks to third-place finishes in women’s basketball and women’s swimming. Conference Standings: Chapel Hill 69, Cardinal Gibbons 63, Cedar Ridge 48.5, Orange 47.5, Northwood 40, Southern Durham 26, J.F. Webb 17.5, Northern Vance 16.5.

Big East 3-A: Hunt holds off the rest of the conference and is still first, with a top finish in men’s basketball and second-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming. Fike and Rocky Mount are now in a deadlock for second, with Fike finishing first in men’s swimming this winter. Rocky Mount finished first in women’s swimming and wrestling and took second in both men’s and women’s basketball. Cape Fear Valley 3-A: With a sweep of the conference swimming championships as well as a top finish in men’s basketball, Terry Sanford secures its first-place position. Union Pines moves into second with championships in women’s basketball and wrestling. Third place belongs to Lee County, finishing second in men’s swimming and men’s indoor track and field. Conference Standings: Terry Sanford 90, Union Pines 74, Lee County 69, Southern Lee 51, Gray’s Creek 38, Westover 31, Douglas Byrd 28.

Coastal 3-A: The race for the Conference Cup remains close as the top two spots are still only separated by a single point. Swansboro has taken over the lead with a winter championship in women’s swimming and second-place finishes in men’s swimming and wrestling. West Carteret is now second, thanks to conference crowns in men’s swimming and wrestling to go with runner-up finishes in men’s basketball and women’s swimming. Previous frontrunner Jacksonville has fallen to third, but is close behind the top two schools, finishing third in women’s swimming, men’s swimming, wrestling, and men’s basketball this winter. Conference Standings: Swansboro 64, West Carteret 63, Jacksonville 61.5, Havelock 50, White Oak 33.5, West Craven 30, Richlands 28.

Mid Piedmont 3-A: League titles in women’s basketball, men’s basketball, and wrestling, as well as a second-place finish in men’s swimming, increase Ledford’s lead over the rest of the conference. Central Davidson moves up into second thanks to a sweep of the conference swimming championships. Asheboro tied with Ledford for first in wrestling and is now third after the winter season. A top finish in men’s basketball for Eastern Alamance, and a top finish in women’s basketball for Walter Williams have the schools in a tie for second after the winter. Mountain Athletic 3-A: A sweep of the conference swimming championships and a second-place finish in women’s basketball keep T.C. Roberson on top after the winter season. Previously in fourth place, North Buncombe now sits in second after finishing second in wrestling and men’s basketball. A.C. Reynolds moves up one spot to third, finishing second in women’s swimming this winter. Conference Standings: T.C. Roberson 130, North Buncombe 103, A.C. South Piedmont 3-A: First place belongs to Cox Mill, which won championships in women’s swimming and wrestling and finished second in men’s basketball. Concord and Hickory Ridge tied with Cox Mill for first in wrestling, but Concord is second thanks to additional top finishes in men’s swimming and men’s basketball. Hickory Ridge is third, adding a second-place finish in men’s swimming to its winter campaign. Second-place Marvin Ridge swept the conference swimming championships and is ahead of Piedmont, which finished first in wrestling this winter. Two Rivers 3-A: Corinth Holders continues to lead the conference after the winter, finishing first in women’s indoor track and field, women’s swimming, men’s swimming, and wrestling, and second in men’s indoor track and field. Cleveland captures second, with a tie for first in wrestling with Corinth Holders and runner-up finishes in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and women’s swimming. Triton drops one spot to third, despite a top finish in men’s basketball and a second-place performance in women’s indoor track and field. Class 3-A/4-A Conference Results:

Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A: D.H. Conley maintains its top form and holds on to first with second-place finishes in women’s basketball, women’s swimming, and men’s swimming. New Bern is still second with a top finish in wrestling, while J.H. Rose is now third thanks to a sweep of the conference swimming championships. Conference Standings: D.H. Mideastern 3-A/4-A: With a sweep of the conference swimming championships and a second-place finish in men’s basketball, Hoggard increases its first-place lead. New Hanover continues to hold off third-place Ashley to remain second, thanks to a league title in men’s basketball, and runner-up performances in men’s swimming and women’s basketball. Ashley finished first in women’s basketball and second in women’s swimming this winter. Second-place South Iredell finished second in women’s swimming and tied for second in women’s basketball with Lake Norman. Alexander Central is third, with a league title in women’s basketball and a runner-up performance in women’s swimming. Second-place Grimsley swept the conference swimming championships and sits just ahead of third-place Southern Alamance. Southern Alamance grabbed first in women’s basketball and third in wrestling, men’s swimming, and women’s swimming this winter. Broughton is still second, after a tie for first in women’s basketball with Millbrook and a second-place performance in men’s basketball. Third place belongs to Leesville Road, which won a share of the conference women’s swimming title and finished second in men’s swimming. Clayton finished first in men’s basketball, women’s swimming, and gymnastics, while Garner captured league titles in cheerleading and men’s swimming. Third place still belongs to West Johnston, which finished first in wrestling and third in cheerleading. Mecka 4-A: W.A. Hough proves to be a formidable force this year with another great sports season. Robinson and Hopewell both move up one spot, with Robinson now in second and Hopewell in third, thanks to a championship in women’s basketball. Conference Standings: W.A. Hough 90, Jay M. There is a tie for second between Pine Forest, which finished third in men’s basketball, and South View. South View finished second in wrestling and third in women’s basketball, men’s swimming, and women’s swimming. PAC 6 4-A: There is a deadlock for first between East Chapel Hill and conference rival Jordan. Jordan was able to move into a tie for the top spot after trailing in the fall, thanks to a solid winter season that included second-place finishes in men’s and women’s basketball. East Chapel Hill swept the conference swimming championships. Riverside remains in third, finishing first in wrestling and third in women’s basketball. Piedmont Triad 4-A: Another dominant sports season for Northwest Guilford has the school one step closer to the Conference Cup. The top school finished first in wrestling and women’s swimming as well as second in women’s basketball this winter. Ragsdale is still in second, with a first-place finish in men’s swimming and a second-place finish in wrestling. Third place now belongs to Southwest Guilford, which swept the conference basketball championships and finished second in men’s swimming. Conference Standings: Northwest Guilford 66.5, Ragsdale 47.5, Southwest Guilford 41, East Forsyth 40, High Point Central 33, Glenn 24.

SoMeck 8 4-A: Ardrey Kell dominates the winter sports season to capture the conference’s top spot. The school finished first in women’s basketball and second in men’s basketball, wrestling, men’s swimming, and women’s swimming. Charlotte Catholic is still second, with league titles in wrestling and women’s swimming and a second-place finish in women’s basketball. Previous conference leader Providence falls to third, finishing third in men’s and women’s swimming this winter. Southeastern 4-A: Pinecrest finished first in wrestling this winter and maintains its lead over the rest of the conference. Scotland is still second after a league title in women’s basketball, while Lumberton has closed the gap in third, finishing second in women’s basketball. Conference Standings: Pinecrest 52, Scotland 36.5, Lumberton 36.5, Richmond 36, Hoke 25, Purnell Swett 21.5.

Southwestern 4-A: Another commanding sports season keeps Myers Park atop the conference after the winter. The top school swept the conference swimming championships and also added a top finish in women’s basketball to its winter campaign. Butler remains in second with runner-up finishes in men’s and women’s basketball. Third place still belongs to Porter Ridge, which finished second in wrestling. Southwest Wake 4-A: Green Hope maintains its top form through the winter, finishing first in men’s swimming, women’s swimming, and gymnastics. A championship in men’s basketball as well as a second-place finish in women’s basketball keep Apex in second. Panther Creek is still third, with runner-up performances in men’s basketball and gymnastics.
