GC Softball Coach Gelin Gets 100th Victory With Split Against NC Wesleyan

GREENSBORO, NC — The Greensboro College Pride softball team returned to action on Thursday afternoon as they welcomed the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan to Salvation Army Field. The Pride fell in game one 4-2 before taking the second game 4-0. With the win in the second game, Pride Head Coach Whitney Gelin picked up her 100th career coaching victory.

The Bishops scored single runs in three innings pulling out to a 3-0 lead after four trips to the plate. The Pride was able to get on the board in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Sarah Connelly sent her 2-2 pitch into the center field gap plating Jackie Nicholson bringing the Pride to within 3-1. Greensboro was able to push another run across in the bottom half of the fifth inning when Jackie Nicholson scored Chelsea Brewer with a two out single bringing the score to 3-2.

The Bishops were able to add another run in the top half of the sixth inning pulling back out to a two run lead at 4-2. The Pride tried to get in the home half of the inning but was unable to push a run across, and dropped game one by a 4-2 score.

Greensboro was able to collect seven hits in the first game, as Nicholson led the way with two hits. Shelby Drummonds took the loss in the circle of game one tossing five innings while only giving up one earned run.

The second game of the day proved to be pitchers dual, as neither team was able to find the scoreboard until The Pride struck in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Allyson Yeager found the outfield grass plating Jackie Nicholson from third base putting Greensboro up 1-0. The next batter of the game (Brittany Rush) drew a walk after six pitches to load the bases for Sarah Tompkins who pushed two more runs across the plate extending the Greensboro lead to 3-0. Greensboro was able to push across another run in the bottom half of the inning when Chelsea Brewer collected a two out single scoring Rush from third base making the score 4-0.

Pride freshman pitcher Lauren Miller was to stop the Battling Bishops in the top half of the seventh inning for the complete game win.

Following the second game, Coach Gelin had this to say about picking up her 100th career win. “I want the girls and the coaching from past and present to know how grateful I am for their hard work and dedication to the program. ” Glien said, “The time spent with each player and staff members have created memories that will always impact my life more than any victory.”

With the two game split, the Pride’s overall record goes to 13-13 and 6-6 in the USA South. The Pride softball team is slated to return to action on Saturday afternoon against the Panthers of Ferrum College. The first pitch is set for 2:00 pm.
